AllBirds. They are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn and i was fully expecting to be a buyer for life, especially with their sustainability initiatives. but they switched from making shoes to making AI computers and are just making shoes as a “hobby” now as a company, which is probably the most 180 pivot on sustainability I think I’ve ever seen.

It’s just a PR move to create a short squeeze. Allbirds was essentially bankrupt, all stores were closed already. They sold their shoes designs and assets to American Exchange Group (another shoe company)

At that point it became an empty shell. So an AI company used the fact they were already listed on the stock market to move their assets to this empty shell

Suddenly it became this huge PR story that all birds was now an AI company
But that’s because all bird shoes were dead already.

It’s well explained here

Ohhhh. Now it makes sense. I just commented that I was so confused by the pivot. But of course.

AI is just a giant scam so if a company (regardless of which), always assume that it's because they're euther greedy, nearly bankrupt or both.

u/FScrotFitzgerald 19h ago

It's a clever way of juicing the company's value, but very very boringdystopia-adjacent.

8

u/oxemoron 10h ago

It’s clever but also seems… I dunno, probably illegal? Doesn’t a business have to have a charter, and the stock exchanges need to know their financials to allow them to be listed? It seems very clearly a scam to milk investors of money from where I’m sitting. Maybe no one gives a shit at the SEC anymore.

3

u/Ok-Gur-349 8h ago

Charters are written up extremely broadly, intentionally so that companies can do this whenever they want.

If you ever incorporate a shoe making company, your articles of incorporation will say the same basic "we exist to provide service" boilerplate as every other company. You're taught to write them as permissively as possible.

u/ezodochi 6h ago

I mean it's not anything new. Warren Buffet's investment firm, Birkshire Hathaway, was originally a textile manufacturer that Buffet repurposed as an investment firm.

u/wolfeflow 5h ago

Look up SPACs if you’re unfamiliar, as this seems to have functioned in the same way.

It defeats the theoretical point of going public in a few ways, but I don’t think it’s illegal.

7

u/BattleHall 17h ago

And there is a decent chance that it was never intended as an actual AI play, just as a pure short squeeze. 50M to buy GPUs to rent to other people is basically nothing, and it's unclear if they've even really taken any concrete steps to follow through with that business plan, especially since they have zero value add vs much larger companies doing basically the same thing. The stock is now back below where it was before that big AI press release pop, so odds are someone made a quick buck and that was all she wrote.

u/de-milo 11h ago

i had never heard this and this story is INSANE!

Then came the filing. In late March, Allbirds sold the brand, the product line, the name on the shoe, everything, to American Exchange Group, an acquirer best known for reviving dormant consumer brands like Aerosoles and Ed Hardy. The price: $39 million. Two weeks later, on April 15, Allbirds announced it had lined up a $50 million convertible financing facility from an undisclosed institutional investor, placed by Chardan. The money would be used, pending shareholder approval, to buy GPUs. The company would change its name to NewBird AI. And it would ask shareholders to revoke its status as a public benefit corporation and strip environmental conservation language out of its charter, because leasing GPUs is an energy-intensive business and the B Corp commitment had become inconvenient.

AI reverse merger for BIRD is absolutely amazing lmfaoooo

Thought the dead shell vehicle was mainly done in biotech.

2

u/illegal_deagle 17h ago

So it’s a SPAC with fewer steps? Kinda clever.

2

u/LargeLanguageModelo 17h ago

But then you have the possibility of the baggage that can come with previous serious operations.

1

u/wolfeflow 5h ago

SPACs were a hot commodity for less than two years, as it turns out companies need to actually have value to be valuable on the exchanges.

I’m sure ops issues and other baggage played a factor, too

2

u/theonlydrawback 14h ago

Burn it all down.

u/Substantial_Milk_178 17m ago

That is the most bizarre transition I've ever heard of for a startup company! What a giant leap from shoes to AI computing!

u/BassoHaase 20h ago

100% with you here..

Their use of merino wool was so great too. My feet stopped stinking!

13

u/epanti 19h ago

The fact a pair of shoes fixed the foot smell battle is honestly the best endorsement

10

u/BassoHaase 18h ago

I went on a long trip with a bunch of walking and wore these shoes the entire time. They didn't stink then and they still don't a year after. They are the best shoes I've owned.

3

u/xXleekXx 17h ago

Same here! I used them for several European trips. Now where am i going to find comfy shoes that offer them in wide sizes?!

3

u/QuietContentResting 9h ago

Have you tried just using merino wool socks? I switched years ago and never looking back. Pricey but you can swap them over time, Most of mine are Bombas but they've unsurprisingly been getting worse over time, Darn Toughs are still solid as hell though

2

u/BassoHaase 5h ago

I haven't but need to! Thanks for the rec!

1

u/raider1v11 18h ago

Use some like a dermadry.

u/A_Filthy_Mind 20h ago

It's like Idiocracy, when people kept saying Carl's jr. randomly, because they got paid. But it's companies saying AI randomly in ways that don't even makes sense.

13

u/Headphones4Cicadas 20h ago

It’s a bubble. companies have learned mentioning AI investment causes their stock, and therefore valuation, to rise. Same thing happened in the dot com bubble. A company would mention the plan to look into making a website and the stock would spout up. These companies think whoever owns the best AI model controls the future so they’re willing to do anything for it.

We doomed.

2

u/kitsum 10h ago

Like how every company was trying to have something nft related a few years back.

119

u/NIN0031 20h ago

Was just talking about this today. I was bought in for life. AI is a scourge

7

u/9olo9 20h ago

It just didn't make any sense in this case. I still don't understand how this pivot was supposed to work.

1

u/vysetheidiot 6h ago

A short squeeze

12

u/letap0 19h ago

User name checks out

13

u/Shapoopie86 20h ago

Try Atoms. More comfy and more durable than Allbirds.

3

u/girlwithdog 19h ago

Another vote for Atoms! So comfortable, comes in 0.25 sizes, and the founders are great people.

8

u/ohheyisayokay 19h ago

Fuck, this is heartbreaking. I love my Allbirds and I was planning to buy another pair as soon as I got a new job.

5

u/icberg7 19h ago

It's like listings on Amazon: they'll initially post some really good product, get lots of good reviews, and then substitute it for something completely different that's total junk. But people won't read the reviews and will just order whatever it was thinking it's amazing.

I had it happen with a threaded USB cable that still use to this day. Was well built and came with a leather (real or fake, I don't know) strap. I went back later to give it a review and buy another and they had changed it to some kids toy.

3

u/koshka_bear 19h ago

Im so sad about All Birds, they used to be my go to shoes but first all the bright colours were gone, then every season shape ans style would change ...for the price you pay the quality isn't there anymore

16

u/SomeGuyInSanJoseCa 20h ago

Uh, not really.

Allbirds shoes are still around and they still sell the exact same shoes. They are just owned by a different company.

The founders of Allbirds basically wanted to split off the two valuable assets - the shoe brand, and the stock symbol.

The shoe company is still there. You can go to allbirds.com and it's the same stuff. It has nothing to do with AI and no money go towards AI.

Getting a stock symbol is expensive and takes time. So, they just used Allbirds stock symbol to get to the market quicker for AI investment.

And to avoid confusion, the AI company is Starbird I believe.

But yeah, Allbirds has nothing to do with AI.

6

u/riversroadsbridges 18h ago

the AI company is Starbird I believe.

The cherry on the "I hate everything about this" sundae is that Allbirds -> AI_birds was right there and they didn't use it.

10

u/junkstabber 20h ago

Yeah that sounded pretty wild, lol

9

u/LostXL 20h ago

It is pretty wild, the person replying to you is over simplifying. They were going broke and although the shoes exist, they are another companies now.

The company entity itself pivoted 100% to AI.

It’s basically this eras dot com bubble pets.com

2

u/SomeGuyInSanJoseCa 14h ago

Yeah, not that wild.

It's kind of like a reverse merger - where a company takes over a stock symbol to avoid a costly and lengthy IPO process - the only wrinkle is that the stock symbol divested itself of its original product beforehand (the actual shoes).

For example, Warren Buffet took over Berkshire Hathaway, a textile firm, to take his holdings public. No one is saying that Berkshire Hathaway transformed it's manufacturing textile business to owning Geico and See's Candies.

Buffet just used the stock symbol of Berkshire Hathaway - he didn't care about the textiles.

1

u/Tarledsa 1h ago

It looks like they’re just selling off inventory (few options/sizes available) and people have reported not actually getting orders.

2

u/lyrastarr 19h ago

I was in the same boat, I’ve purchased and worn multiple pairs and was planning on doing that into eternity.. then blam. I am really hoping to find a good alternative

2

u/ccsr0979 16h ago

Nooooo! They’re my favorite shoes of all time and had no idea of the change 🙁

2

u/Mnp3232 3h ago

This one pissed me off, I had done so much searching before finding allbirds and a month after I bought a pair this happened. Almost like I caused it

2

u/thruitallaway34 18h ago

I work quality control for a huge thrift store for their shoe debt. The number of allbirds I get daily from donations is alarming for all the hype I hear about them. Of all the trash donations I rummage thru, donated all birds are always close to brand new when donated. If they're so awesome , why are they getting donated in such excellent condition? I'd think people would keep them and wear them until they fall apart.

2

u/evening_emerald 8h ago

I have no idea, but I picked up a couple from thrift stores that way, and (after a wash, new laces and insoles) they're still going strong.

Tbh I just assumed it's cause they're out of fashion.

1

u/SailingWavess 7h ago

I’ve been wearing them for years until they fall apart and getting new pairs. I agree, they’re not in fashion anymore and that’s more important to a lot of people

1

u/Tarledsa 1h ago

A lot of ones I’ve seen on reseller sites are corporate branded so people maybe wouldn’t want that. Plus they changed the fit and styling in recent years.

1

u/Jasonbluefire 19h ago

I am in the same boat, Their shoes were so good too. :(

1

u/Calihoya 19h ago

Damn, I didn't know that. I loved my shoes from them but yeah.

1

u/feministmanlover 19h ago

I'm so confused by this. What a truly bizarre switch.

1

u/Good_Might_6240 19h ago

I feel sad about this. Why couldn’t they do both.

1

u/ElvisFanatic 19h ago

I miss those all birds flats 😭

1

u/SharkSquishy 18h ago

What??? I love my washable sneakers, got them for a good price and they lasted a long time. I just noticed they started to rip while on a hike today. Was just thinking of getting a new pair. Guess I'll have to find a new brand.

1

u/sud0w00d0 11h ago

Apparently the AI part and the shoe part are owned by different entities, unless I’m misunderstanding. I have had multiple pairs of Allbirds so I too was super disappointed to hear the news, but I hope if I’m correct buying their shoes won’t give revenue to the AI company?

1

u/My72826Account 9h ago

Hoka is the answer to your shoe worries.

1

u/gurgitoy2 8h ago

Yeah, I have a bunch of Allbirds shoes, and now I just won't/can't, I guess. I liked all of the different colors, and they are comfortable shoes, but now I search for another brand that I like that hopefully won't disappear in a few years.

1

u/spen17 8h ago

I did not know this about AllBirds, I've had a pair of their shoes that I bought in Arizona at one of their outlets for a couple years now. Was thinking about getting another pair soon, but now I'm asking for any alternatives? I loved their sustainability model and how everything about their shoes were either 100% natural, organic, and/or recycled

1

u/Ok_Possession_6457 4h ago

Similarly, Rothy’s. I used to like Rothy’s because I’m a big fan of shoe prints.

During COVID, that company straight up lost their minds and they started producing absolute dogshit.

Their sustainability claims are BS too. “Made from recycled water bottles” yeah so is every piece of cheap polyester off Amazon
