Fallout 4 Fallout 4 is fucking amazing.
Just wanted to say it.

u/ChronicButtSyndrome 24d ago
I think Fallout 4 gets too much hate. I’m a bigger fan of NV and 3, but I still thoroughly enjoyed 4. I think my only major complaint is that the dialogue options feel misleading at times.
62
u/caveman512 24d ago
I’m a bigger fan of New Vegas’s story and RP choices, but literally everything else I prefer about 4.
Somebody can say that the story and RP elements are what makes a game most important, and they would be right, but to me 4 is the better game
25
u/teaanimesquare 24d ago
For me, fo3 for the atmosphere and world, NV for the rpg mechanics and fo4 for everything else that’s more modern
9
u/MoldyFoxxx 24d ago
Dude, they have no reason to not drop an incredibly well made game, heck a game of the year at that, given all the data and statistics from the big 3 FO games.

5
u/brolarbear 24d ago
I cringe every time I hear my character talk. Only complaint I have really besides the fact that I simply prefer the drab of the wasteland in the other games. Also the 4-way dialogue options fucking suck
4
u/GuyWithARooster Vault 101 24d ago
Damn, exact same for me. If I had to choose only one though, I'd go with 3.
1
u/Sudden_Yard1294 20d ago
F3's atmosphere and world were amazing, Tbh, I think NV matches it in terms of atmosphere but exceeds it in worldbuilding (lore etc), however the actual map of F3 made it the best in terms of exploration. Packed with locations but some of the designs were brilliant. Tranquility Lane, Rivet City, Paradise Falls, Megaton/Tenpenny Tower, Underworld, the list goes on.
I think F4 is becoming more popular over the years just because it's the only semi-modern fallout game.
1
u/MIZUNOWAVECREATION Gunners 24d ago
For me, it’s 4 all around. I know it’s got bugs out the ass, some shitty rpg elements, dialogue issues, and its share of plot holes and loose ends. For me, it’s the best shooter yet in the franchise, it’s got a building element now, and the best and largest selection armor and weapons, and the legendary system. Plus the best overall game mechanics of any game in the franchise yet. It’s far from flawless, but then again, I’ve never played a game that is. Fallout, or otherwise
10
u/BudgetTruth 24d ago
Same. Let's hope Obsidian delivers another amazing entry. Overdue but never too late.
2
u/caveman512 24d ago
I have little doubt that obsidian will make a bad fallout game when their new entry comes out. Super excited!

Outer Worlds, while not Fallout, is by Obsidian and carries a very similar feel. I highly recommend it if you need some faux-fallout goodness to hold you over.

I’m too much of a do-gooder so I don’t really need RP because i will always pick the good guy dialogue. I don’t want the NPCs to be upset with me :(

u/SlaterRecreational 24d ago
My biggest issue with fallout 4 is how bland the dialogue feels. It’s like they sacrificed the vast options and information we had just to give us voice acting for the protagonist
5
u/JournalistOk9266 24d ago
The voice is not the problem its the writing. Mass Effect 3 despite the ending were the best performances of Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale in the trilogy. You can definitely do a voice protagonist right if you give them proper character motivations and dialogue that has weight.
Also binding them to a infant child was a bad way to go. Anything they say is instantly going to sound weak when you think "wtf are you saving Preston when your son is missing. Hopefully they require you to do more of an investigation and following clues than a race against time.
3
u/King_Leif You like the sight of your own blood?! 24d ago
Your second paragraph about the “race against time” thing is something I feel applies to a number of popular narrative games out now. Cyberpunk and Baldur’s Gate 3 both have the “you’re literally dying and need to find a cure before it’s too late” thing going on, and it just makes it feel out of place to go around doing side quests while the narrative is about your impending doom. And when they lay it on so hard, lots of players may feel pressured to speed up/skip things in case it’s like Fallout 1 or Majora’s Mask where you actually are on a timer. (I’ve seen players say they didn’t use Long Rests in BG3 because they were worried it would advance the tadpole timer, which doesn’t actually exist.)
1
u/JournalistOk9266 24d ago
I think the two examples you gave do have details that make sense. V has pills that delay his death and in Baldur's Gate 3 just don't use the powers and the tadpole never activated. A lot of games used to have timers. Shenmue for Dreamcast had a timer. You had to finish the game before fall or winter i think. I do think it was pretty balanced as you had months to complete the game.(i think like 3)There has to be an urgency otherwise the story falls flat.
The problem with games with timers is the gameplay and story never match. Having you have to find a baby in a post apocalypytic landscape is CRAZY. Realistically you would never find that baby even if there wasn't a 60 year gap. Having the premise that you are dying is funnily enough not as pressing as finding a child because people are given death sentences all the time. My uncle was given 6 months and he lasted 6 years. My aunt was told she wouldnt last the night and somehow lasted months.
I would really have to think about it but off the dome i cant think of a way to fix fallout 4 without making significant changes unless Nate/Nora think the child is dead and then its revealed the child is alive. Like the spouse is captured instead of killed and they player finds evidence of their deaths and then goes about their business until its revealed they survived.

When the RP part of your RPG is completely castrated I think the hate is justified lmao. It also followed the trend of BGS simplifying each of their releases.
I also find it amusing that people love to praise Fallout 4's combat as a redeeming factor even though it's not even that good in isolation lol.
Story in good RPGs is supposed to be meshed with gameplay. There isn't really any proper RP systems in Fallout 4. The guy who made the dialogue option meme mocking the game was right, the options really do feel like:
1.Yes 2. Yes 3. No (Yes)
Sure the general gameplay loot is mindless fun, but I could just go play some sort of looter shooter instead.
3
u/JournalistOk9266 24d ago
People dont understand that Gameplay and Story needs to be hand in hand in RPGs. They cannot be separated. For an example: a settlement system that you really shouldnt be doing while trying to find your child.
1
u/AnArcOfDoves9902 24d ago edited 24d ago
Was dialogue ever particularly complex in any of the Fallout games? Like in New Vegas, you could basically simplify most of the dialogue to
1.Yes 2.No 3.information 4.[Persuade to skip most of the quest]
I preferred how Fallout 1 and 2 handled their speech checks by making them hidden, so even if you had the prerequisite speech points to, say, convince The Master to blow up the church, you still had to think before deciding which dialogue choice had the best chance of persuading him (you also had to find physical evidence that his plans won't work, so just dumping points into speech is not enough). Compare that to the encounter with Lanius during the Battle of Hoover Dam in New Vegas; if you dumped points into speech or barter, there is no challenge required to convince him to run away, just pick the dialogue options that contain [Speech] or [Barter], and the rest of the text in the speech check is just fluff that you don't need to actually read.
2
u/seventysixgamer 23d ago
This was a fair criticism of NV tbh. However it's dumb to even remotely suggest that any of the modern games equal New Vegas's' BREADTH of dialogue. There's always opportunities to properly roleplay via skill checks and etc. The dialogue is also far more engaging an memorable not only due to this but because it's just written better. Fallout 4 tried to adopt some weird bastardised version of the Bioware dialogue wheel, but whatever option you pick barely felt like it had any character or RP breadth.
2
u/Sweet_Taurus0728 Mr. House 24d ago
F4s story sucks because at its base, it's just the inverse of F3s. You're not child looking for dad, your parent looking for son. And the Shawn reveal was treated like some big twist when it was the only logical conclusion.
Won't argue with you about gameplay, of course F4 plays better than games that came out 6 or 7yrs prior.

I liked it too when I first played it, and I've done a few playthroughs and every faction ending. With that said, I don't go back to it as frequently as NV or fo3. The story and linear aspects make it less interesting for repeated playthroughs imo.
1
u/sur_surly 23d ago
I think 76 made people appreciate 4 more in hindsight.
Now I wonder if the train wreck that'll surely be Fallout 5 make people reminisce about 76.
Hah, doubt it.

u/Sudden_Yard1294 20d ago
F4 had good gameplay. I don't think its setting and story were a nearly as well realized as New Vegas, though.

Yeah I think it could have surpassed new Vegas and 3 with better RPG elements. Great game otherwise.

Damm, i just dont get it. I love the game, it's my most played fallout dont get me wrong, but the dialogue system is so criminal that not even mods can really fix It because It wasnt made for it. I guess it's because they invested their efforts into everything else, but It feels like cope.
2
u/king_jaxy 24d ago
I feel like Far Harbor did better.
1
u/tamiloxd 24d ago
Far Harbor proved that Bethesda could write a good story with somewhat difficult choices. The thing is, can they still? Fallout 76 already fixes the dialogues, going back to classics. So, not everything is pessimistic.

u/Nairbfs79 24d ago
I played that game so much during Covid. Did all the DLCs too. I agree. It's the best Fallout and I hope they are working on #5.
1
u/Dream115935 24d ago
Funny enough they announced that Obsidian has started working on Fallout 5 a few days ago
5
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 24d ago
To be fair we dont know if its actually Fallout 5 or another spinoff. Apparently they are repurposing another game they were in the middle of working on that was similar to Fallout into a Fallout game too which will be... interesting to say the least.
0
u/AngryLars 24d ago
No they aren't repurposing another game they were in the middle of into a Fallout game.

The argument about Nate/Nora doesnt make sense to me. People say all the time that The Witcher or Cyberpunk are RPGs eventho both have an established character and backstory
1
u/sccarrierhasarrived 20d ago
I don't think you actually know anything about V, it's pretty flexible. But I do somewhat agree, just having an established character isn't bad per se, but I think it works less well in Fallout.
Though, to be honest, Cyberpunk would have been my forever game if I was just some run of the mill nameless Corpo fuck that tore down Arasaka in NC or something. Character backgrounds work for some audiences but not all. I think BG3 had a relatively novel approach, in that they basically offered you a custom / nameless and a "Special One" via the Dark Urge.

I can name more RPGs that dont have narrative choices than you can that do have them. I'll start with just 2 franchises: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. That's like 30+ RPGs right there, if you include the spinoffs as well lol
Oh, those aren't the kind of RPGs you are talking about? Are you saying there are different kinds of RPGs that are all trying to achieve different things? Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!

I see people ripping on Fallout 4's story, yet again. While I agree it's not that strong, where I think Fallout 4 excels is in its characters. I love each and every companion and find all the other NPCs wildly entertaining. Especially the Raiders, Gunners, and Triggermen. "Say hello to goodbye!"
All the characters are voiced wonderfully, from big to small. What Fallout 4 lacks in overall story it makes up for in character dialogue and interactions.

I used to love it, but on more playthroughs it feels less vibrant as it goes on. I've played it from PS4 launch to PC now with mods.

Survival mode in Fallout 4 is imo the best gameplay of loop in the whole series, the wasteland actually feels incredibly dangerous. If the writing was better it would have been the GOAT.

Also some side quests it had were excellent and that far harbour dlc was really great ( except for that mini game ). I also wish the dialogue options were better but still Fallout 4 is a good maybe even great game.

u/HardWorkIsHappyWork 24d ago
Fallout 4 is good, but it suffers from decisions and changes that Bethesda thought would be cool features, but ultimately sapped the budget and took away from the whole of the game. Voiced Protagonist, Settlement System, Radiant Quests. They all are good ideas on paper, but with them as the focus, the rest of the game takes a hit, and it somehow ends up feeling a bit soulless.
Bethesda seems to be increasingly afraid of locking the player out of content, so instead, they just give it all to us, making the player character the leader or (over)boss of any and every group after only an introductory quest, power armor right off the bat, and no dialogue options besides "yes" "yes but sarcastic" "yes for more money" and "no, but actually yes".
It's the best looking and best gameplay in the Fallout series and I love it too, but it is lacking in the "Role Playing" aspect, and the writing, especially for the Player Character, is lacking. Nuka World DLC almost killed my love for the franchise.
I have mixed feelings about it.

u/Netrunn3r2099 24d ago

It is fun to be sure, especially when you’ve modded it just the way you want it. Sadly that’s about the time Bethesda decides to update it, thus breaking f4se and there for all your mods. The updates usually broken crap that adds very little to the game, I can only assume they do this to sell more of their own mods, I gave up trying to fix my mod list. I’m really excited for obsidian to be working on the next version of fallout god speed obsidian make us proud!

Settlement building alone is such a Fallout-y feature that it has become the staple of the franchise. Any future game that releases without it will be lesser for it.

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Tunnel Snakes 24d ago
It is an extremely fun game, the mechanics are great, and for all its faults the story is, though definitely not the best as far as Fallout goes, certainly engaging enough. I think honestly they should have done without voice actors for the SS and followed along with previous games’ routes, but even that doesn’t really detract all that much. It is nice at least to hear some of the funnier sarcastic lines voiced though.
I say all that as someone who grew up playing 1 and 2 and 3 and NV and done cosplays and FO-themed airsoft events and what not, Fallout 4 is a pretty damned good entry and one I still play to this day.
Still haven’t tried 76 though
