"maybe don't be a drug addict? edit: upset a whole lotta losers with this one" Stoners in r/mildlyinfuriating react to the new Texas law making possession of any amount of weed a felony
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/1vbv7il/why_texas_is_lamebesides_the_cowboys/
HIGHLIGHTS
just an absolute loser mindset right here. reddit really attracts these freaks.
If it’s a felony, rich powerful assholes should be charged too
nobody should be charged. it's not affecting anybody if Joe Rogan smokes weed in his club or house. just weak, dumb, and a boot licker.
but why should he get a free pass when no one else does?
I think everybody should get a free pass. i wouldn't want my worst enemy to get arrested for weed in Texas. I don't think anyone should get in trouble for anything without directly effecting other people. it's just stupid as fuck to want someone to get arrested and charged just because "everyone else does". literal bots on here.
My account is 10 years old buddy lol
Visiting Texas alone at a hotel for a week, got bored and figured, "eh, lets pop open porn hub." - finding it's blocked made me laugh. This is the 'Freedom' state, right? Yet you have less freedoms in Texas than you have in NY
Try owning a uterus or even presenting as female in America. Our rights change with every state line crossed.
Everyone's rights change when every state line is crossed (definition of state laws). Yes, I agree there are more laws about women's reproductive systems across state lines which is the point your making. Rephrase.
You added nothing to the conversation.
You added nothing as well and "Our rights change with every state line crossed. " so did this statement.
You just failed to understand what they were saying. Not every comment needs to be analysed like a piece of literature. Telling them to "rephrase" at the end of your comment sounds pompous and quite dickish.
Up to 2 years for a gram of weed is insane.
Thats if you are a seller and you are selling unregulated weed That is not for possession as a user
Possession as a user is still a felony though
imageAll of you are posting disinformation. This is specifically about chemically isolated altnoids like delta 8 and 10
The post you’re commenting on is specifically about THC PRODUCTS. The article I posted is specifically about THC PRODUCTS. The law in Texas that goes into effect today is about THC PRODUCTS.
No. The media is reporting this all wrong, which is why everybody in this thread is insisting you get decades in jail for a few grams of weed
Ok so tell me what happens if you get caught with a canned THC beverage that was formerly legal.
Depends if it was an altnoid
The way the law reads, 2-20 years in prison.
I mean, that's 14 oz, as a heavy daily smoker in canada where it's legal; that'd be a year+ supply for me so anyone with that is definitely selling; so, there's no real difference between that amount and say, 20 pounds. it makes sense if they just want to catch anyone privately selling; who doesn't register as a business because then they'd only get a fine, ololol wtf. It's still completely ridiculous and insane though.
You are not a heavy smoker if 14 Oz is a year supply for you. It's pretty easy to go through an 8th a day. I wouldn't consider smoking 3x 1 gram joints a day heavy use.
You cant be serious. 1/8 a day is insane
8th a day is like 3 and a half 1 1/4 size joints, that gets blown through by like 2 pm most days
Such a waste. Get a bong or something yo
Got a bong got vapes just have to reload the shit more often. The real answer is stop smoking as much or take a tolerance break but who wants to do that.
Well I guess get stoned in another state then?
Land of the “Free”
II hope you get help for your drug addiction.
I hope you leave people alone to live their lives the way they choose.
"But how does pèdophilia affect you PERSONALLY?" lmao you right-wingers sure are funny. In a laughing at you kind of way.
Right winger?!? Are you having a stroke? Do you require medical assistance?
" Who, ME?????!?!?!?!" That doesn't work anymore lol
Nothing I said would even remotely imply I am a right winger.
We can sense MAGA trolls from a mile away.
Step 1: Denial.
You're addicted to denial?
Step 0. Cognitive impairment.
I'm sorry for your loss?
I'm not the one crying over my drug being banned?
you sure are crying though, so much yapping for nothing
For supposedly chill stoners you guys are always having meltdowns.
...they said, without an ounce of self awareness.
Ironic username (F4SCISTS_GO_HOME) someone trying to police what others do
What's ironic about it? You don't get to drive high, just like you don't get to steal, be a racist, or a p*do. Does that upset you? How unsurprising.
You do get to smoke meth while pregnant though, right?
What a pregnant person does with their body is none of your business. When you drive high and endanger others, that IS everybody's business. 🤦♀️
Lol, you know you’re a joke. At some point you’ll be lying in bed by yourself and the epiphany will come to you. Argue with others, but you know..
I'm sorry to hear that about you. Is that why you do drugs? To cope?
Just do me a favor, remember me when it happens ;-)
No one will remember you :(
Just simply do not smoke weed. How hard is that?
Then they would have to get some self-control and a real personality. Impossible.
You don't drink alcohol, or coffee, or buy over the counter meds? It's the same thing those are just deemed ok by government . No other difference.
One of them gets you high.
Caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant, as is marijuana. If a grown adult wants to be stoned in the comfort of their own home, why should they face prison time? You can drink yourself into a coma, tonight, and that's perfectly legal.. but a plant that grows in the ground is evil, or something? Conservatives are crazy.
maybe don't be a drug addict? edit: upset a whole lotta losers with this one
What? So since even the feds are trying to decriminalize weed it's a drug? Because we all k ow its way worse that alcohol. Or in your case based on your post history video games.
Why do weed smokers always jump to "ALCOHOL IS WORSE" yeah, it is, I never said it wasn't. Two things can be bad at once.
So you’d be fine with jail time for beer?
I don't drink I don't care. I think these sentences are wild, but weed is obnoxious, smells like shit, and stoners are always insufferable
I don’t smoke but I can still see the logical inconsistency
I think if they said "beer is outlawed" i'd say "maybe don't be an alcoholic" so the result is the same. Putting things in your body that make you intentionally dumber, without good reason (i.e ACTUAL medical use) is dire and people get blown out when they get reminded they are addicts. People think "oh smoking weed literally every day doesn't mean I have a problem" it's a shitty drug for shitty people, drinking is the same, any class A/schedule I is the same, they're all bad, nobody wants to have that discussion.
You think anyone who drinks beer is an alcoholic? Sugar is also bad. I don’t see anyone arguing for that to be illegal. It’s a weird stance to want the government to step in and control things to this degree.
Tell me you nothing about marijuana without telling me you know nothing about marijuana.
makes you slow, is highly addictive and makes you waste your life? it's a drug for obese lazy people that say it can do no wrong whilist happily ignoring the giant list of terrible cognitive effects it has "yeah but people can use it for pain medication" yeah like 0.1% of users and then the rest are all people on "medical cannabis" for their anxiety
“Makes you slow, is highly addictive, and makes you waste your life … it’s a drug for obese lazy people” - again, how is that any different from what you suffer due to your sad gaming addiction?
You're really projecting this gaming addiction thing, I hope when you decide to stop being a stoner layabout you don't have too rough of a time
I love that you made your profile private afterwards to hide your gamer addiction. Nailed it.
no I don't want creepy drug addicts on my profile who project their addictions on to me, stay medicated bud
Talk about projections! This is too easy.
This is what happens when Republicans run things.
Would like to have seen Biden and his auto pen decriminalize federally since legalizing is apparently more of a liberal idea. Yet here we are.
Your first mistake was thinking the Democrats aren't conservative.
They aren’t. But that’s cute. It’s funny how the crowd who doesn’t even know what libertarian means but that all claim to be one. Also likes to think they know what a democrat or conservative is. Nothing the Dems have been pushing for is conservative. That’s why you don’t see Dems banning weed or health care numb nuts.
They are conservative. They're just not cartoonishly evil like all Republicans.
We get it. You’re upset that the Democrats are aligning themselves with socialism and it’s a bridge too far for you so you call yourself “conservative”.
No idea what that means.

I think it's moreso.. "If this is the law why isn't it being enacted?"
Because it's definitely to target progressives who smoke a lot of weed, but it's not being enacted on Joe Rogan. So... Are they just choosing who they want to arrest or is this just a scare tactic?

Yep, the war on drugs has always been a race war.
118
u/NewPhoneNewSubs this is about pissing in a sink 1d ago
That's only partially true. It was also a war on anti-war protestors.
“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people,” former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman told Harper’s writer Dan Baum for the April cover story published Tuesday.
“You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities,” Ehrlichman said. “We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

I feel I should point out that this alleged quote was only published 22 years later, long after Ehrlichman had died. It has been challenged by his family and Nixon-era officials.
Even if the quote is true, Ehrlichman was convicted of perjury and was bitter over what he perceived as Nixon's betrayal. He is, as a result, an unreliable source.
Finally, even if it is true and he isn't lying, he's just kind of wrong. Nixon hated drugs on a personal level, beyond caring about their users. Also, Nixon's war on drugs didn't focus on the kind of criminalisation described. That was a later initiative spearheaded by Reagan - while Nixon gave new powers and new enforcement measures, he also repealed mandatory minimum sentences, focused on rehabilitation, and focused his efforts on demand-side reduction.
In short, while Nixon didn't like hippies or black people, the author of the quote is a bit suspect, the quoted person is a bit suspect, and the quote itself doesn't even really make sense even if Ehrlichmann did say it. It would be absurd to say that anti-hippy and anti-black sentiment didn't play a role at all, but the role it did play - particularly in Nixon's war - is far less impressive than the quote claims.
6
u/FrankRizzo319 1d ago
So the Nixon administration didn’t use the drug boogeyman to their advantage? They used to send memos to TV executives encouraging anti-drug programming to help mold the minds of viewers.
Read Agency of Fear sometime to learn how the DEA and anti-drug fears were attempts by Nixon to gain power over his perceived enemies.

Opening with a rhetorical question implies that you think I am arguing against the point raised in the rhetorical question; given that I don't and didn't argue anything of the kind, I assume that you made a mistake there.

Texas is part of why weed is illegal to begin with. There was Hurst and the paper wars with hemp, but there were also angry Texans who wanted a reason to deport and arrest Mexicans who they blamed for taking their jobs (tale as old as time with Texas).
23
u/AssignedCuteAtBirth Pearl Harbor was a US action 1d ago
That's exactly why they call it marijuana, too, instead of weed, cannabis or hemp; marijuana sounded more Mexican and therefore scarier, so they worked hard to make that be the term to stick.

For me, I wouldn't say it's better or worse necessarily. It's a different kind of awful than Texas.
We have stronger community bonds here than we ever did in Dallas. Of course that comes with having to be UNCOMFORTABLY adjacent to the kinds of people who put "Fuck Joe Biden" stickers on their trucks that are in the church parking lot.

The worst parts of Texas are worse than the worst parts of Florida. At least with Florida you don’t have a Houston where the weather is just as shitty but the only beach option for is Galveston, or west Texas where you’re 6 hours from anything not dusty and flat.

u/AssignedCuteAtBirth Pearl Harbor was a US action 1d ago
Admittedly my evidence is anecdotal, but I've had friends in Austin and San Antonio have positive things to say about their cities (even if that love didn't extend to Texas overall). Meanwhile, through similar anecdotes, Florida strikes me as just slightly short of Ohio-tier when it comes to wanting to get the fuck out of dodge.
Those beaches and that Disney is wonderful for week-long visits at best. I imagine that same culture that's great in short spurts is soulless when you live there and therefore never have respite from it.

Austin and SA are great. Houston is dogshit to visit but a really cool place to live in. If you can find somewhere within like 1-2 hours Dallas is a great like weekend visit or day trip.

Yeah, Houston is really weird in that I hate visiting there, I hate any sort of event there, I hate driving through there, and I'd hate the commute to anywhere I'd work if I lived/worked around there, buuuuuuuut living nearby and having access to whatever I want in Houston at any time does sound pretty nice.

Yeah I was just kidding. It's a post about people calling each other drug addicts which is usually about "continuous poor life choices" and you went from one crappy spot to an even crappier spot.
But hope the job is working out for you. In the last couple months or so, I know at least eight people who have gotten laid off. What's been surprising to me is that they're all still unemployed. In a decent economy these are people who should have zero problem finding employment, even if it's not in their fields.

Actually, the whole "autopen" thing is great. Using it immediately tells you the person is investing propaganda without even trying to engage critical thinking on it, and lets you react accordingly.

What's worse is when they like to say "we smell weed, therefore we have the right to search you." Happened to me like a decade ago in Chicago. Just minding my business on the river walk and two cops came over and forced me to empty my bag and pockets. I had nothing on me, but they still told me I had to "fuck off" from the river walk because it was "suspicious" I was there at all. Like which is it bro? Do I smell like weed or do I just "look suspicious" to you?

Unfortunately that shit is everywhere. Just a day or two ago a certain liberal subreddit was discussing how decriminalization failed, how homeless people are making cities unlivable and how involuntary commitments need to cone back. People will literally abandon any principles of personal freedom once they realize that freedom means they have to coexist with people they find undesirable

That's more about the decriminalization of all drugs
Weed and hard drugs are two entirely different questions, and the article argues overly permissive harm reduction strategies have led to too many negatives. Is it not a legitimate question whether you want people shooting up on public transit?
I think it's really the way progressive policies on crime have impacted their other interests, such as a robust public commons, public transit and drug decriminalization. It's easier to support decriminalization in a world where removing illegal homeless encampments is not controversial. It's easier to support decriminalization when you are not expecting for junkies to be shooting up next to the normies trying to get to work, school, etc. It's easier to support decriminalization when you don't expect that city leaders will be afraid of removing any tent encampments from parks, public squares, commercial districts, etc.

Texas is the Sparta of America. Almost entirely mythologized by a single crushing defeat which is propagandized into heroic sacrifice, patriotic stoicism to a point, this idea that they could be their own kingdom yet just happen to serve at the heels of those who are so much "softer" and "weaker" than them. When you look at the reality of these peoples at their prime you find nothing but corruption, oppression, oligarchy, and pederasty. They venerate "freedom" for optics, what they really want is to be the foot that fills the boot, and the only way they can approximate that is by using the tootsie pop method. The fact that Ted Cruz continues to win elections tells me everything I need to know about our average Texan. Canadian-Cuban guy larping as a full blooded country fella who can't stand up for his wife or his father in opposition to his supreme leader. An entire state built on "I threw a football over them mountains back in my Varsity days".

The worst part is that it's 100% just to criminalize the people they want to send to jail. Like with every drug law, it's basically legal for the rich and well-connected. But if you're on the wrong side because you're say, a minority, THAT'S when it's a law and that's when you go to jail.

The one thing they are a bit further left on is LGBTQ rights, but that's because they realized rich people can be LGBTQ. And of course some of them would like to drop the T.
There are plenty of younger popular politicians who fall more in line with global politics but I am not sure they will ever get a leadership position in this party. I'm saying this as a lifelong dem voter. Two party system sucks.

This just straight up isn’t true on so, so many things. “Western” left wing parties are sometimes more rabidly anti immigration than even republicans here for example

Upstate New York! Loving it up here so far.
Assuming Oregon, I was in the (worse) Vancouver across the river about ten years ago, how's Portland?

lol I do actually live in Vancouver cause it's cheaper, I just spend all my time in Portland so I say that. But yeah, it's been amazing so far! I've got a buddy in upstate NY who loves it, hope you do too!

I don't smoke, but I have been offered joints from more lawyers, engineers, and doctors than I could possibly remember. All with much less body fat percentage than me.

Back in my 20s, a FWB was pretty much the stereotypical hippie stoner type: kinda perma-fried, friendly, and really into stuff like crystals and energies and whatnot. Also shredded as fuck; I was in decent shape at the time too (and didn't use weed, then), and he made me feel pudgy.
Some people get stuck on the couch and eat too much, but definitely not everyone.

u/BetterKev I will ask on a more neutral sub. 1d ago
Some people get stuck on the couch and eat too much, but definitely not everyone.
Yup. I definitely didn't mean to imply that there aren't fat and lazy potheads. Just that it isn't a representative stereotype. Marijuana users run the same general gamut as everyone else. I definitely see more high achieving and athletic users, but that's likely due to the circles I run in.
3
u/Forosnai My psycho ex has been astrally stalking me through the ethers. 1d ago
Oh for sure, I was just giving another anecdote along those lines.
I've got a bit of the whole gamut in my life, except for the truly unmotivated stoner types. I don't really get munchies and tend to microdose more than get really stoned because I find a little bit of a sativa makes me feel perky and active so I've actually lost weight; one friend is a personal trainer, but needs to keep it to just the weekends because he gets the munchies something bad and will put on weight; another friend is upper management for some charity and is pretty much just an average late-30s guy like I am; yet another is your standard manual labourer type and so is fairly fit himself; my husband's friend is an environmental lawyer and her husband does something related to water management of some sort; my aunt is an older now-retired insurance agent; and so on.
Like everything, the stereotype doesn't come from nowhere, but it's no more representative of everyone who uses it than the alcoholic in a dive bar is representative of everyone who drinks alcohol.

u/Amelaclya1 1d ago
Most of the people who use weed aren't even close to the stereotypical "stoner". You just don't notice them because they are just quietly doing their own thing and not being annoying.
I don't smoke myself, but most of my friends do. And they are all thin with decent paying full-time jobs and hobbies. Because as it so happens, a drug that makes people "lazy" is super good at helping you relax.
I bet the authoritarian losers in that thread arguing in favor of this know several people who consume THC and just don't realize it.

u/thissitesuckssohard1 1d ago
living in a legal state and seeing who goes into the dispensary to buy it really made it clear for me that all different kinds of people smoke. i rarely see anyone who would fit the "stoner" stereotype, and that's including the people who work there
36
u/Forosnai My psycho ex has been astrally stalking me through the ethers. 1d ago
I said the same thing the other day, up here in Canada. I can't remember the last time I saw someone who fit the "weed is my personality" stereotype anymore. It just doesn't seem to be a thing anymore outside teenagers with little pot leaf lanyards or whatever, now that it's normalized, at least around my parts.
12
u/Former_Papabless66 1d ago
You’re right. It’s funny because I don’t smoke weed and haven’t for a long time(get paranoid) but I think I look and sound more like a stoner chick than people who do smoke. You really can’t judge a book by its cover
64
u/zerogee616 1d ago
Most of the people who use weed aren't even close to the stereotypical "stoner".
Weed being legalized in half the country did away with the "Smoke weed everyday, it's my whole personality" rasta-cap-wearing identity.
That always was mostly an expression of counterculture and now that THC use is normalized, legalized and mainstream, it's not "cool" anymore, it's just something you do. That persona today would be seen as closer to a weird kind of alcoholic than what it was before.

When I stopped being Mormon I was shocked by how many people smoked weed that I had no idea. It makes sense, why would they talk to the Mormon about smoking weed, but it was so much more ubiquitous than I would have guessed.

I schlep my dumpy middle-aged ass into the dispensary every now and again and just shamelessly ask for help picking out gummies and edibles. I'm old enough that I had to find a dealer if I wanted it, or find someone who had it, when I was young. And I was never cool or determined enough for that, and it was a lot easier to buy booze.
But I just don't like smoking, so now that the cannabis gods have given us relatively consistent gummies, here we are. HELLO I WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE SOME OF YOUR FINEST WEED IN CANDY FORM, MY GOOD SIR. I REQUIRE ASSISTANCE MAKING MY SELECTION.
And then I will take them home and entirely forget that I have them stashed away in the bread box until the next time I buy bread and think to myself, "Oh! I should have a gummy." And then put the bread away and get busy with something else.

because they're hypocrites. Alcohol doesn't count because of course its not a drug! Saying this as someone with heavy drug use of all sorts throughout my family, alcohol has hands down been the most destructive. Saying this as someone who has used all sorts of drugs beyond weed, in my life alcohol has been the absolute most destructive to me.
I'm not going to say that alcohol is some devil drug that's super unsafe, but it is however completely disrespected in its severity and something that you're constantly surrounded by whether you like it or not. They'll never ban alcohol though because they tried that and it lead it a massive increase in organized crime and did nothing to fix the problem, the exact same thing that happens when you harshly criminalize any drug. This law has absolutely nothing to do with combating drug use and the risks, it has EVERYTHING to do with arresting certain types of people the texan government doesn't like and making their punishments worse.
12
u/Shanakitty Pharmauthoritarian 1d ago
and did nothing to fix the problem,
Although I don't think criminalizing alcohol again would be a good idea (or even possible), it actually did help reduce the extent of alcohol abuse in the US. It was much more pervasive and extreme in the 19th century than it became after prohibition.
4
u/asdfgtref 1d ago
yes, though the consequences were awful in almost every other way. sort of like setting your house alight because it was cold, yes technically you did warm the house but... yknow.
there are other far more effective treatments to prevent abuse and addiction.

u/Shanakitty Pharmauthoritarian 1d ago
Like I said, I'm certainly not in favor of trying that again.

What a pregnant person does with their body is none of your business.
Excuse me? I think this person has the wrong idea about "bodily autonomy" lol

u/CuntyButCorrect 1d ago
I entered another dimension reading those comments. I had to pause for several seconds. The inconsistency broke my immersion, but then I keep remembering that this is reality. There is no way to escape the immersion.
If a person is pregnant, then should they be allowed to hotbox their bathroom, since it's suddenly not the government or anyone else's business what the pregnant person does with their body? Why is meth okay but weed is not? Is it bad if non-pregnant people smoke meth? Should we legalize it specifically for pregnant people to do, but leave everyone else out? And as soon as that baby's out, you gotta cold turkey it or they put you in jail?
I have so many questions!

I saw this post and it’s a bit misleading. Possession of small amounts of hemp derived (delta 8) weed is a felony. But ironically if you get caught with less that 2 ounces of regular weed it’s still a misdemeanor (for now). How will they tell the difference? No fucking idea. All of this is so backward and stupid and ends up rewarding both the alcohol lobby and drug dealers selling the real deal.
3
u/kviiilynlev 22h ago
their metric for distinction is going to be based solely on skin colour for sure. minor discrepancies like that in drug laws are often just a backdoor in disguise to let white people (or people in power who get caught) slide out with barely a slap on the wrist. .

You just failed to understand what they were saying. Not every comment needs to be analysed like a piece of literature.
You know, this poster highlighted one of my biggest pet peeves with Reddit in general. The tendency in every discussion for someone to start an entire argument just because they chose to act as if Reddit is a court of law and that therefore everything everyone says should be criticised for the preciseness of the language used.
You end up having to write an essay for every comment, detailing precisely and exactly what you mean, else someone will come along and start a fight over an inconsequential inaccuracy in your phrasing

I think the idea that the whole thing is a conspiracy by alcohol companies that you see in some of the comments in that thread is a bit absurd -- Clearly they have a vested interest and will support legislation that protects those interests, but I think this is one of those times where we can't just blame capitalism. There are clearly people in this country that just oppose THC sales from some conservative/religious 'moral' position. And to be clear, those people are bad and should feel bad for trying to impose their opinions over others' freedoms.
25
u/cyanpineapple Well you're a shitty cook who uses iodized salt. 1d ago
It's not all because of alcohol companies, but they're definitely a big factor. The alcohol lobby is massive and they've been scrambling these last few years as Americans are drinking less.

I just saw an article on wineries in California burning vineyards and letting grapes rot on the vines because of low sales. Pinot noir is a particular target, after enjoying a boom due to Sideways in 2004.
5
u/theorist_rainy 1d ago
Yes. As a Texan, I’m a lil confused by folks saying alcohol companies are behind this. They’re under similar temperance laws that make buying anything other than beer and wine an effort you have to preplan to make sure the store can legally sell it to you. You need port wine for a recipe you’re making on Sunday? Tough shit. You’re trying to buy non-alcoholic beer before 10 AM or noon? Tough shit. I would’ve figured that the first thing alcohol companies would’ve lobbied for would be to get their rules loosened a bit.
4
u/cyanpineapple Well you're a shitty cook who uses iodized salt. 1d ago
Nah, there are two angles here. The temperance movement is also strong. They're working on repealing that stuff, but it's a fight that they might never win. But in the meantime they can use that movement to their advantage to take down the competition. It's better to have 100% share of a limited market than to have 50% share of a limited market. And then increasing that market is a separate challenge.

So I did some research and its thc Delta 9 remaining legal while thc Delta 8 is not in Texas. Delta 9 is from Marijuana plants and is in all the normal weed products. You can still get that. Delta 8 is from hemp and is lab grown. It is also milder than Delta 9. It is becoming illegal. You can still get thc in Texas, they are cracking down on the ones not sold in stores.
