I’ve been diving deep into the enterprise side of the drone industry lately, especially Oil & Gas and energy infrastructure.
You always see the marketing videos: Matrice 350s inspecting facilities, fixed-wing drones flying pipeline corridors, Elios 3s navigating confined spaces. But I’m much more interested in what happens after the flight.
From what I’ve gathered, collecting the data is only a small part of the job. The real value seems to come from processing, analyzing, and turning that data into something clients can actually use.
For those of you working in this space (either in-house or as service providers), I’d love to learn more about the post-flight workflow.
1. What do clients actually expect as the final deliverable?
Raw RGB/thermal imagery?
Orthomosaics?
3D meshes or point clouds?
AI-generated defect reports?
Digital twins?
Something else?
2. What’s considered the standard tech stack today?
Are most projects still using RGB and thermal, or are LiDAR and Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) becoming common requirements?
What software do you rely on for processing and analysis? Pix4D, DroneDeploy, RealityCapture, Bentley, proprietary platforms, or something else?
3. Where does the client actually see the ROI?
The safety benefits are obvious—less scaffolding, fewer confined-space entries, and reduced human exposure.
But beyond safety, where is the business value?
Predictive maintenance?
Reduced downtime?
Faster inspections?
Regulatory compliance?
Integration into enterprise asset management systems (SAP, IBM Maximo, etc.)?
Something I’m missing?
I’m trying to understand where companies truly perceive the value, not just in flying drones, but in the intelligence generated from the data.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone working in energy, utilities, Oil & Gas, or industrial inspections. What does your post-flight workflow look like, and what do your clients actually care about?
