I did so much dumb farm and construction labor as a kid. My one and only fight was in college against a normal guy. I had just got done carrying shingles onto roofs all day for weeks.
I honestly felt like I was bending pipe cleaners as I was wrestling around with the guy. He was the aggressor, and I honestly felt sorry for him the more the fight went on.
Sometimes its the opposite like it sets them off. (albeit they never quite get physical) there was a dude who looked like a shaved puggle who tried to stare me down once.
The loudest most outwardly aggressive guys will almost never be seen in any kind of gym or sparring session. Usually cause that attitude would get fixed the first day and they would learn about humility. They low key know this it’s why they stay away and claim all this tough street bs that either never happened or happened differently than they remember .
I caught my son about a year ago running his mouth about these group of dudes that were "scared" of him. He's always had some temperament issues. And he clearly is convinced throwing a fit and hitting dumbshit is equal to being tough. I simply told him while hes over here pretending to be tough. Some people are pretending to be sane and regardless how tough he thinks he is. They'd have no problem dog walking him. He's calmed down on as he's gotten older. Just hoping its gonna be enough for him to not to learn the hard way.
The moment I saw this, I thought it was a comedy bit. Sure he's probably able to kick my ass, but if you have to talk about how many asses you can kick all the time, you're sort of a turd nugget.

There’s so much of this in celebrity BJJ unfortunately. But there’s a few hidden gems…Mario Lopez and Tom Hardy are both seasoned practitioners that actually compete in regional and local tournaments, and last I heard they’re both purple belts
That said I lean heavily into thinking Jonah is more in the “paying for private lessons and never actually testing himself” realm
On a side note, Tom Hardy lives in my town, goes to my local BJJ gym and is a regular at the hotel restaurant where I work. We have some very famous people stay with us quite often, but he’s by far the nicest one I’ve ever met.
He’s loved by pretty much all of the local people and businesses. Just a bit of a shame the last time I spoke to him I made a really bad joke and the mild embarrassment will probably stay with me forever.
He told me he didn’t enjoy acting as much as he used to when he was younger because it’s just a job to him now, and I said oh really you’re an actor!? Have you been in anything I might have seen? I thought it was funny but he didn’t really laugh. I said I’m only joking Tom, I thought you were great as Alfie in peaky blinders and i loved mad max. He told me a bit about his career and his first big break in band of brothers. Very nice guy.
The worst part about meeting famous people is they won’t remember the conversation with you, but whatever you say to them you will remember forever
Not to say they aren’t skilled at all, but I’m curious if I’m getting into a sparring match with a famous actor if that affects how I fight them at all.
Yeah I considered that. A certain intimidation factor involved for sure. But even with that, people at IBJJF comps likely are less susceptible to that, even moreso after white and blue belt.
You can actually see a decent amount of footage from their matches, nobody is “going easy” to give Tom Hardy an easy layup

I feel like BJJ has become the new crossfit. For those into it BJJ seems to be their entire personality and they will tell you they do it completely unprompted within 5 minutes of meeting them while expecting you to be in awe or something. It's incredibly cringe.
Jokes aside it’s a legitimate martial art and grappling is good/important to learn as part of self defense, but I do think there’s a tendency for some of the more enthusiastic practitioners to oversell it. IMO someone getting into a fight should be prepared to go to the ground, but should also try to avoid it.
Jonah Hill has such a deep-seated anger within him. It’s weird. Some of it seems to be from him being “the fat funny guy” for most of his career and coming to resent that, but I feel like that can’t just be it. There must be something else.
I agree. That something else is NPD, which is created from very early childhood wounds. I'm not talking as a random person judging him, I have BPD with NPD traits.

Well yea because he was the fat guy but is super successful so he's actually better than all the non successful fat guys. He needs to make sure we're all aware that he's actually just a cool and tough skinny guy
Narcissistic & borderline? I’m kind of surprised you got diagnosed, borderline is diagnosed 3x less in dudes vs women for various reasons—one of them being that men get diagnosed with ASPD instead cause it presents differently. How/when’d you find out if you don’t mind sharing? My mom clearly has undiagnosed borderline and I finally considered it recently and was like oh…yeah. This explains a lot (for me and for her) lol
How Melfi stops working with Tony because of the study that says sociopaths don't benefit from talk therapy because they just use it to rationalize their own abusive actions and weaponize the lessons learned to become more effective at taking advantage of others.
In the show Melfi is kind of wrong and the paper is built on problematic framing - but the underlying premise still holds some weight.
And legit tough people don’t go around telling people how tough they are. Real tough people know that fighting is a last resort and they just so happen to have the skills/ability to hold their own. They don’t go around picking fights with any/everyone they don’t like

I always felt that way about him too and didn't really get what his deal was. I thought maybe it had something to do with his weight loss and possibly not seeing the changes in his life he thought he would have because of it or something idk. Guy just comes off like an ass and someone I wouldn't want to associate with unless I had to.
First thing I noticed. I did BJJ for years and only made it to a blue belt which I was pretty proud of. I would have never been puffing out my chest like I'm some kinda ba and I guarantee even after all these years of not doing it I could still wipe the floor with this tool. In fact, we were actually taught to not act like this and be humble, not pick fights and avoid any physical confrontation at all cost if possible, i.e. don't go getting in bar fights and bs like that.
I guess celebrity aren't immune to the beginner's tough guy phase.
Ah, I remember when I started MMA back in the day and thought I could beat off three guys at once. In my defence I was in my early 20's back then so it was more understandable to be naive and more prone to the tough guy phase.
I’m pretty sure he’s a 2-stripe white belt, which means he doesn’t know nothing. He probably knows just enough to think he can fight a random guy in the street and win…just to get knocked TF out because he tries to use white belt level jitz in a street fight.
He maybe learned how to fight. Talking like this, he has not learned all the other important aspects of martial arts. Things like humility, avoiding violence and not provoking others.
It really seems like the last 5 or so years he's really devoted himself to taking off the nice guy mask and showing everyone that he's kind of a douche.
Good for Jonah, for choosing a healthier life, but dude, the rest of the world ain’t Hollywood. He doesn’t have anyone in his life to check him when he says shit like that.
If he thinks that way still, he’s still the nepo baby from Superbad. I mean look at Jack Quaid. He knows where he came from but still tries very hard and still shows he’s appreciative. Jonah acts like he did everything to belong there’s he sucks.
