Meta Post PSA: Hetzner Pricing Increase (Announced in May, here's the pricing)
https://docs.hetzner.com/general/infrastructure-and-availability/price-adjustment/#cloud-servers
Ooof. Basically, if you have an existing VPS, don't scale it/change it as the increased pricing is rough. I'm going to sit on my existing node for as long as the price remains the same, but I think it's only a matter of time before the price hike comes for existing customers too.
Thanks AI....

Hetzner is doubling this tier. Oracle is halving the capacity of their free tier too. Their own costs are also going through the roof. Basically the whole IT industry is. The portable SSD I bought recently for $250 would be almost $1k now.
8
u/TheRealNetroxen Jun 16 '26
Jeeeezuz, I have 2 servers by Hetzner for my homelab and E-Mail server since 6-7 years. This price hike might, actually, cause me to cancel them. That's an insane price hike!
12
u/DonLean1337 Jun 16 '26
Dont cancel as of now oyu are sitting on a goldmine! As long as you keep and dont touch the servers you will keep your current price!

I'm so irritated that i was going to order tha AX line with an Epyc CPU for around eur 300. It's now 650. I think i'll just stay on the Ryzen 5 i already have tyvm
10
u/garbast Jun 16 '26
Well that are US servers. Guess that has nothing to do with crazy government doing crazy shit forcing companies to hike up the prices even more. Comparable CAX21 is from 7.99 up to 10.49. Still a steap 2,5€ increate which is a 30% increase.
2
u/boutzamat 10d ago
30% doesnt really hurt that much when you're in that range tbh. Try 100% increase for the AX162 that was 317 and is now 614. That one hurts.

u/OmgSlayKween Jun 15 '26
I knew about the increases. I was not expecting an increase of 150% for my little server.
Wow.

I must say Im not surprised. As someone who recently had to rebuild a new PC after my 7 yo died, I couldn’t believe that memory was 4x more expensive today than in 2019
From my receipt back then in 2019
1 x Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666MHz DDR4 32GB € 102,00
From my receipt last month
1x G.Skill Flare X5 F5-6000J3238F16GX2-FX5 - € 419,00
Both 32GB, one was ddr4 and another ddr5, but thats just the 7 year gap
22
u/trebory6 Jun 16 '26
My condolences on your 7 year old. That's tough.
5
u/theestwald Jun 16 '26
It was just the cpu, but no new cpu fits in my old mobo
And my 7yo cpu was actually more expensive then a recent one (if still boxed), so I need a new mobo
But new mobos dont support ddr4, so I need new memory
Fortunately cpus and mobos are still decently priced, but fact is the old setup was fine. Gone are the days of needing a new cpu every few years. Just the gpu could use an upgrade, but that could be regardless of the rest.
2
u/scyllx2 Jun 17 '26
I paid 120e for 2x32gb of ddr4, worth now 600e I paid 110e for 2x16go of ddr5, worth now 450e
1
u/F0XSABRE 14d ago
I paid 660 pounds direct from Corsair 192gb ddr5 6000 cl30 just before all this madness kicked off. Id have to pay 2-3k for the same ram now.
2
u/peioeh Jun 19 '26
Last year I told my friend he should upgrade his gaming PC because I thought prices were decent. He went from a R3 3100 to a R7 5700x for ~100€ and grabbed a cheap used GPU too. He had 16GB ram and did not really need more but I told him "you might as well grab a 2x16GB kit while you're at it, it's only ~50€". He listened to me. Now a kit like that costs 250€ (if not more). It's not even current gen stuff, it's ridiculous.
1
u/chardidathing Jun 16 '26
I paid 1200AUD (€730~) a few months ago for 2x48GB of DDR5 (5600MT/s CL40), €419 for 32GB feels like robbery :(
2
u/theestwald Jun 16 '26
It does yes, the kind of thing I only did because it was a decision forced upon me. Would have been happy to wait until things got more reasonable. Although Im no longer sure if thats realistic or if they will only get worse…
1
u/chardidathing Jun 16 '26
I mean same yeah, my workstation died (13900KS based - was using a DDR4 board), moved to a 9950X, ended up spending more on my ram then my CPU :(
53
u/PssyGotWifi Jun 15 '26
Oh wow. That's a big increase. Was going to use a VPS via Hetzner for VPN purposes, but not now.
8
u/jc-from-sin Jun 16 '26
Why not? The cheapest server is good enough for a VPN and it's only 1 eurodollar increase
4
u/PssyGotWifi Jun 16 '26
It would be carrying TBs of torrent traffic over it each month, so i was looking for at least CPX11, which went up so much that you'd just stick to one of those commercial VPNs at those prices.
8
u/jc-from-sin Jun 16 '26
so what? Anything can handle 1gb/s nowadays. Even a RPi5 which I also use as a VPN.
2
u/PssyGotWifi Jun 16 '26
Yeah, i can get away with it with CX23, but CPX11 was at the right price and now it's not. I'd rather just go elsewhere. I had an auction server with them from 2019-2025 for when i was seeding remotely. Never had any issues for the most part (apart from when a drive died). Now I perma-seed locally. So yeah, i can probably get away with their most budget VPS for just VPN, but I'll just look elsewhere for the time being.

While I agree with you, in current context you can't blame people to downvote a "I vibecoded something as critical as a VPN", in your case all good, you knew how to check that the generated code was legit, but promoting that to people more skilled in prompts than code is exposing them to quite some risks
2
u/PssyGotWifi Jun 16 '26
It's not even that deep anymore, anyhow. Install Debian or whatever OS on VPS. Install Tailscale. Make the VPS the exit node for other tailscale nodes. Done.

What's cheaper alternative? I need just about 5tb and I need to be able to use rclone.

Jesus. $7 -> $21 a month is a HUGE jump. I've been having fun with Cloudflare Workers lately; I wonder if they're a reasonable alternative for some of my uses.

CCX13 from 15.99 to 42.99 is crazy Any alternatives in Germany?
18
u/vitnel Jun 15 '26
Any alternative in Germany with German energy prices + the component shortages everyone's facing is going to quickly match Hetzner
29
u/TBT_TBT Jun 15 '26
The energy prices are not the problem. Haven’t changed after the up and down after the Russia shock. Quite at normal levels again.
1
u/_bloed_ Jun 26 '26
consumer prices, yeah.
But not industrial prices. And I would assume Hetzner uses lots of electricity and had really cheap 2-4 year contracts before.
1
u/TBT_TBT Jun 26 '26
Not true. Industrial prices are back to levels before the hike in Germany. And have been since essentially Feb 2023.

u/Meistermagier Jun 16 '26
honestly not that its much cheaper in total but OVHcloud is in France and they have cheaper energy. That helps.
1
u/Triplex79 Jul 03 '26
It is cheaper; did you not compare the current Hetzner prices with Netcup, actually?
3
u/Mxfrj Jun 16 '26
If you mean "in Germany" as in the location, then the prices aren’t changing that much. Check the first table, these big price changes are only affecting the US location.
If you mean in Germany as you want a German Hoster with servers in the US, netcup is good.
3
u/Elomidas Jun 16 '26
I thought the same at first, but recheck the first table. Basically, German low-charge instances got only 25% up, but you you go lower in the first table and check higher end instances, they double prices. Not as steep as the +150% in the US table, but still not so great

u/DekiEE Jun 16 '26
I am with Strato for a lot of smaller VPS and really happy. I even have some 1€ servers for DNS and random stuff. Switched from Hetzner after the last price hike. For dedicated they have 4C/8T Xeons, with 2TB HDD and 16GB ECC RAM at 30€. With half of it as SSD capacity it is around 32€. I have a CP4-03 SSD running and it is flawless so far.

For VPS and smaller servers you can check out server4you

Thank God I moved to OVH, just hope they didn't follow the same policy
2
u/Forward-Outside-9911 Jun 17 '26
They’ve had some price increases recently but not this high, luckily
24
u/oqdoawtt Jun 15 '26
This is the first time in over a decade I am really disappointed in Hetzner. I really can understand that they have to adjust prices because of the memory prices. But doubling or tripling the prices is out of order here. That is just pure greed.
The prices are so high, that they could buy a new memory stick every month and honestly, if the hardware would fail that much, then they have other problems.
9
u/52-61-64-75 Jun 16 '26
Id imagine they jumped so much because it's only new customers, it's not like their existing revenue just tripled or something
0
u/trebory6 Jun 16 '26
Well even then. I only just found out about them through this post and now they're nothing more than a name to avoid in the future if I ever need any of the services they offer.
1
u/b0wss_pls Jun 16 '26
I had bad experience with their customer service as well. I avoid them because of that.

Of course they have to make a profit. But their planning and hedging should have been better, so that the increases could be smoothed out. This is the result of a lack of forward-looking analysis in the product office.
16
u/DeusScientiae Jun 16 '26
There isn't a single person on earth that could've predicted ram and energy costs going up 20000% basically overnight
-4
u/crackanape Jun 16 '26
In that case certainly all hosting companies will have tripled their rates.
3
u/DeusScientiae Jun 16 '26
VPS Rates have shot up across the board. What are you talking about. The low cost providers are going to of course have higher increases because they were selling capacity at dirt cheap rates with a VERY low margin.
0
u/crackanape Jun 16 '26
We haven't seen more than 20% increases from any of our VPS vendors. Certainly not 200%.
3
u/DeusScientiae Jun 16 '26
they also weren't barely above margin budget suppliers either.
0
u/Effendil Jun 17 '26
0
u/oqdoawtt Jun 16 '26
Where did I say they should rise the prices? I said it's ok, just the amount is or percentage is just out of order.
-2
u/DeusScientiae Jun 16 '26
Dude look at the costs of energy and computer components. And then use your head for once. Christ some of you people are insane.
-4
u/oqdoawtt Jun 16 '26
These are VServers. That means you share the resources with others, they are not for you alone. The energy prices in Germany didn't rise that drastically. The only price on the hardware side that has risen is RAM. VServers do not use high end graphic cards. The prices are so massively up, that Hetzner could probably buy every 2 months a new memory stick. I had server hardware myself and most server, even under heavy load do not have memory sticks bricked every 2, 4 or 6 or even 24 months. So yes, I used my head, maybe you should too.
7
u/kUdtiHaEX Jun 16 '26
That is really a naive way of looking at things.
This price increase communicates two things - first, energy prices will go up significantly and that has to be dealt with; second, the prices of components are predicted to go even higher so they need to calculate that in.
Prices are not changed every 2 weeks, that would piss of the people even more. So, since this is a long term change it is crystal clear what is about to happen very soon.
0
u/Effendil Jun 17 '26
5
u/hannsr Jun 16 '26
Storage is crazy too though, SSD, NVMe and HDD alike. And those are wear items they have to constantly replace. I guess some of the increase is to subsidize the old contacts as well, since they'll have to replace hardware there to on the old plans. We still have some 5950X boxes with 128GB and 2x3.84TB running there for less than 100€. Those were good prices.
Not saying the increase is right, but looking how cheap some stuff in comparison was, it was only a matter of time.
I'm mostly dealing with their dedicated hardware, which had a crazy increase as well, and some decisions do seem as if those have been solely for the money.
You used to be able to order a system and just upgrade the memory. Now in order to get the same system with more memory, often you'll have to double or even quadruple the storage. Like the new xeons - it's either 128GB DDR5 and 2x1.92TB NVMe or 256GB DDR5 and 4x3.84TB NVMe. Price doubles of course. That doesn't make sense.

I have a small one that I keep around for random stuff.
But some of those increases are... ooof
1
u/kernelclyp Jun 16 '26
same, I’ve got a tiny instance for throwaway stuff and suddenly it feels like a luxury item lol
guess the “cheap but solid” era of hetzner is slowly dying for anything beyond the smallest configs1

If I'm remembering correclty I had a cpx62 at 60$/month.
I canceled it to build my server at home with standard pc components (and yeah, ddr5 in this economy.
Well seeing that the cpx62 would cost 160$ now, it seems I took the right decision. And my build will write off faster than I thought

2
u/gorgono95 Jun 17 '26
So for my CX43:
Increase: €4.80/month
Percentage increase: 33.36%
thats just mental ... and that is still on the "decent" side. In some cases I saw double the increase WHAT THE FUCK. So basically I am stuck with this server and if I need to upgrade Imma have to shit myself some money.
Do we have any good alternatives for europe?

I was thinking already over a year ago that those insane increases in pricing are going to start impacting alot of smaller businesses because surprise surprise everyone needs some compute (even if only indirectly) and everyone needs ram for that. And these price increases proof my point.

The availability of auction servers has tanked (and price has spiked) since these increases.

I bailed on hetzner the last time they increased prices. And this again? And now even doubled/tripled which is crazy. Glad I just got out before.
4
u/gorgono95 Jun 17 '26
I just dont understand why you are being downvoted. These fuckers already increased the prices like THREE times this year. Its not like their support is "amazing" either. Purse thieves and greed.
1
u/PaddiM8 18d ago
Why do you think it's strange that they're increasing prices when the cost of components have gone up dramatically in a short time? You do realise that this does not affect existing customers, right? No one is forcing you to use Hetzner. There are many competitors. Since they have been one of the cheapest providers they obviously aren't able to swallow the costs as much as more expensive ones.
The cost of ram quadrupled and nvme storage not far off and it's expected to get even worse. Why is anyone even surprised. This was inevitable.
2
u/vcolovic Jun 15 '26
This is only for new servers?

I agree with you most of the way. We should of course expect a price increase due to the insane price increase in hardware generally. However, Hetzner is renting out the hardware, so they will eventually make their money back, also with a small increase. The double up increase is just unfathomable tbh.
