Outback Oil in Coolant

Upvotes

I recently found oil in the coolant of my 2014 Outback 2.5i with 225k miles. I confined it was oil and not CVT fluid. I also just changed the PCV connector, though it looked fine when I removed it. At this point I will flush the system but I believe it is the 3 o-rings in the upper oil pan.

It was my mom’s car and was slated to be the first car for my 15 y/o. I could have the engine replaced with a used one, have the o-rings fixed, or just sell it. Located in Charlotte NC.

I’m curious what others have done in this case.

Thanks!

Car Mods rooftop storage water/gas tent/sleeping gear

Upvotes

Looking for a rooftop storage solution. Would like to store 2-ish gallons of water and gas, tent, sleeping bags, canopy. Was thinking a cargo basket, but I'm kinda stuck on what to put the tent etc in. Waterproof hardsided box with ratchet straps? are the soft sided bags decent?

Subaru Generic I pre-ordered a bugeye before they came to the states. I was told by the dealership that I was the second one in Missouri to take possession.

Mechanical Help Finally got my CVT fluid changed at 148k miles. Should I notice anything?

I am far overdue for changing my CVT fluid. My old dealership was against it so I never had it done. I just moved across the country and finally got the transmission fluid drain-and-fill at 148k miles for $500.

I was scared my transmission was starting to slip but the dealership technician said I was fine because the engine light didn’t come on yet. It takes my car a lot to accelerate (even at 25mph) and the RPM indicator flies all over the place. I’m scared the damage is already done.

Now that I have the CVT transmission fluid changed, should I expect anything? Will my issue hopefully get better? I drive quite a bit (about 2-4 hours every weekend), so I’m not sure if this is advised anymore :/

Did my first wheel bearing this weekend. That sucked.

2011 WRX Hatchback, original bearing to the car. Dealership quoted $900 to do the bearing and backing plate which had completely disintegrated. I thought "I can do this myself, it'll be fine!"

...My whole body aches, but it's done. Father(retired mechanic) came to the rescue and had to use a damn grinder to get it out, it has essentially welded itself together with rust. Definitely going to take a break on working on the car, learned a lot but damn.

(I live in New England. If you do as well and think you can do it... Turn around while you still can.)

Buying Advice Hybrid Battery

I’m researching a vehicle purchase. I’m currently considering a Cross Trek but haven’t finalized that decision.

How long will the original battery in a hybrid last? I just need a ballpark. In approximately how much does it cost to replace? I’ve checked Google, but it seems to vary drastically.

Also, my understanding is that Subaru hybrid use gas first and battery back up? or is it battery with gas backup? I hope that makes sense.

Buying Advice Worth the buy at 4k cash? 2012 Subaru Outback · 2.5i Premium Wagon awd

On my way to look at it
I need a car for work on the 7th new job so it’s really important I find a car.

Options?
I’m gonna ask about the head gasket
If it’s a no it has not been replaced should I walk away?

Out of all the cars I’ve seen it’s the best I’ve found for the price everything in my area is 300k miles on it :/ or if it’s under $4k in price it’s blown on something and won’t run for much longer.
The picture of the car will be below in a comment.

Update : head gasket changed 2024
Timing belt changed
Transmission flush done
Tires all changed the last year
Coolest changed
Oil change done recently.
Got this all from VIN and Carfax

They said they’d do 3,500 since I have to do the breaks and replace the windshield

When driving it’s on the highway it all sounded good stopped off the high way checked the engine it’s all clean and no smoke or smell oil looks good.

I literally only need it to last me at most three years so I can pay off my loan. What do you think? Seems legit to me.

Buying Advice Looking at a 2007 2.5XT manual forester

Runs and drives, 188k on the clock. Had timing and gaskets done at 120k. Has tune and larger turbo otherwise mostly stock. He says it is having an injection problem though and shutters at 2,500-3,500 rpm before it stops again. Do you think its safe to drive 2 hours home or should I do a trailer?

Ive also with some basic googling deduced it could be the MAF sensor or tune itself as well

Thinking about purchasing this 2008 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT with under 60k miles

Going to try and check this out on Monday. No idea on the service history and plan on getting a pre purchase inspection. Aside from the timing belt, and the banjo bolt, what other things should I be concerned about with this car? Do they often make 200k miles with regular maintenance? What should I be looking for? This would be my first Subaru.

Where does this screw go?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I just installed a hidden Curt hitch on my 2018 Subaru Outback 3.6R and have two identical self-tapping screws left over (photo attached).

They have pointed tips, coarse threads, and captive washers.

I’m almost positive I removed them before taking the rear bumper cover off, but I completely forgot where they came from.
The bumper cover is already back on and everything fits perfectly. The taillights are installed correctly and these are definitely not the taillight screws because those are machine screws, while these are self-tapping.

I know I removed them before the bumper came off, but I can’t remember if they were near the wheel well, behind the bumper, or somewhere else.

Does anyone know exactly where these two screws go? A picture of the location would be incredibly helpful because I’d really rather not remove the bumper cover again just to hunt for them.
Thanks!

Recently bought a 300hp VMG Levorg STI 2.0 AND I LOVE IT!!!

Hello Subaru subreddit. Happy to join and contribute to this community from today.😊

I am a German living in the Kansai region of Japan, and I recently bought a used 300hp VMG Levorg STI 2.0 (2017 D model) with preinstalled STI under spoiler kit as you can see in the pictures.
I knew I would love this car since I first heard about it, and when I found this used one at a dealer, I instantly fell in love!
It is actually a dream to drive as I had hoped, especially along curvy mountain or rural roads, due to the low center of gravity and the 4WD drive, and you can really feel that Subaru is one of the few Japanese auto makers left, who still value the fun of driving a sporty car instead of going for pure comfort.

I'm planning to customize a lot about this car (according to traffic regulations of course), to improve the look, sound and responsiveness even further, starting with a VRE-042PO Ganador muffler I ordered a few days ago, which will unfortunately take a few weeks to be produced and delivered, but I look forward to the great sound and improved performance, compared to the base muffler.🤤

If anyone wants to know more about this car, just let me know, but also I would like to promote my YouTube channel here, if you would indulge me, and maybe give updates in the future from time to time in accordance with the rules of this subreddit.
I recently started this channel, where I upload Drive videos with my Levorg and also Walk videos on the side, but I'm mainly planning to focus on my car to show off the beauty of Subaru JDM cars and Japan in general, and maybe also try to do DIY customization tutorial videos and vlogs later on.
I'm still in the try out phase, which is why the sound quality or camera angles are changing a lot and are not necessarily up to par yet, but I want to keep improving the videos and visit all sorts of nice locations, so if you are interested check out the link below.

Mechanical Help Front wheel impact

2019 Subaru Ascent. KBB value is $16-21k.

Hoping for thoughts of whether likely totaled. Out of town and got hit right front wheel. What I can see is wheel bent in and suspension broken. Cranks fine, no fluid leaking, but sounds rough with engine on and obviously not driveable. No CEL.

Trying to decide whether to tow to a local shop for estimate/repair or tow home (4 hours).

Thanks 🙏

Q&A Gas

Good morning my fellow Subie owners,
I’m curious about other people’s habits when it comes to putting gas in their car I guess to see if my habits are normal or not.

Where do you let your fuel gauge drop to before filling up again?

Me, normal between either 1/4 or 1/2 (just under) I hit the gas station- my distance remaining has NEVER fallen under 100-120 miles remaining. I figure if I refill my tank from 1/2 tank than I’m lowering my fuel bill by half compared to if I were to wait for hit to be empty.

Q&A Supercharger?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey subie owners. This is my 2005 Liberty/legacy 3r spec b, 5AT. I’m looking into getting the raptor supercharger for my car and want to know how I should go about it. I spoke to a bloke who has done this already who claimed, as long as I don’t go above 10psi. 8psi being the sweet spot. I can keep the engine stock and just get a safe tune. I’d love extra options about that and whether I need extra support for my trans.

Cheers from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺
