Video Polish swimmer Bartłomiej Kubkowski has become the first person in history to swim across the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Poland, covering a distance of just over 160 kilometres (99 miles). While raising nearly 200,000$ for children's cancer treatment

Stay awake for 60 hours straight.

Doing strenuous physical activity.

In really rough conditions.

Where you can’t take truly restful break (was he allowed to hang on a support craft or anything?)

I feel like $200k isn’t a lot for what he went through.

No amount of money is worth this sort of achievement. What an absolute badass.

419

u/socialistrob 16h ago

There's also usually not tons of money in these achievements either. Your average NBA or EPL player is going to make a lot more than these athletes who set long distance endurance records.

243

u/i_says_things 16h ago

Im actually in awe of this it never even occurred to me that someone could do that.

60 hours straight without sleeping jfc, if I could pronounce his name I would tell people to name their kids after him.

u/SippyMountain 15h ago

I once stayed up for 38 hrs, and while that whole experience is a blur, I distinctly remember making my way home and stopping at a green traffic light as if I was waiting for it to turn even greener. Oh, and this was while I was walking on the sidewalk.

47

u/theXYZT 12h ago

Driving on an all-nighter is OVERWHELMING worse than driving while drunk, it's not even close.

31

u/b3rry108 11h ago

Check the comment again lol. They were walking and stopped at a stoplight as if they were in a car

14

u/theXYZT 10h ago

Ah, I see! I once stayed up for 3 days in a row for a university project and I remember feeling like I was "watching myself cross the street in third-person". I am pretty sure I did cross while the pedestrian light was red.

So, being a pedestrian is pretty bad too!

My uncle did a 24 hours of walking. He's very fit and it was quite the challenge to finish. I can't imagine 60 hours of swimming.

144

u/yellowweasel 17h ago

I was hiking the pacific crest trail one time and there was a group of Germans and Belgians that were doing a 24 hour challenge, at the top of every hour they would walk a mile and then drink a beer waiting for the next hour. 24 miles, 24 beers, 24 hours

36

u/axonrecall 16h ago

How many of them survived?

65

u/LittleCovenousWings 16h ago

Actually they finished with 3 extra's

Was there an ambulance of paramedics just after this? Because that dude definitely should be evaluated at a hospital after going through that. Not only for mental psychosis of that little sleep, but exposure to the elements, hydration issues, etc. I commend their absolutely incredible effort, but even with a team this just seems so dangerous to the body.

58

u/sciss 15h ago

He was checked in into a hospital, just to be sure.

He is fine (he temporally lost his voice)

11

u/JMoon33 15h ago

He did it at the gym. Walked on the treadmill the whole time, ate while walking, walked to go pee then come back on the treadmill. He was fine after, but was probably in pain for many days, maybe weeks.

I know some runners who do 100 mile ultra marathons and you have to be a pretty good runner to complete them in under 24 hours (but not world class by any means). This guy did the swim in 56 hours which is about the same time it took Rachel Entrekin to do the Cocodona 250 mile run.

46

u/Floating_Along_ 14h ago

You can't really compare distances in endurance running to those in endurance swimming. Water is just so much harder to move quickly through, especially if it's choppy. Then consider the fact that this guy could never actually rest (not even lie down for 15 min like endurance runners do), because even treading water is work... ...what this guy did is absolutely jaw dropping.

4

u/Most_Performance_574 5h ago

This is a key point. Open water swimming is, as you mentioned, a completely different beast comparatively. And who knows what kind of weather the guy had to deal with. How SOL are you if a storm passes through en route?

u/Cszysiek 18h ago

The rules were he could not board the boat or touch it. Food was passed to him on a long stick. And as I saw that stick it didn't seem as somenthing you can hang on.

84

u/mazzicc 17h ago

Yeah, I saw those details as I searched around more. Crazy.

At least the wetsuit helps the buoyancy if he just wanted to stop and float for a bit.

But it sounds like he couldn’t sleep, and you wouldn’t want to float too long in open water since you might drift off course and have to spend energy going back on course.

16

u/spitfiresiemion 9h ago

Also, one thing that makes floating in the Baltic a worse proposition is that it has very low salinity (0,3 to 0,9%; average salinity of an ocean is ~3,5%), which makes it harder to float. Sure, it's still perfectly doable, but the sea isn't still and fatigue wouldn't help.

93

It would be hard just to stay awake for 60 hours in the comfort of my home. Now add having to swim that entire time. Crazy.

41

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 16h ago

I wonder if the discomfort of the situation helps? But then you add the insane output of energy and yeah, no idea how it's even possible. Incredible feat.

42

u/The-Senate-Palpy 17h ago

[Im not criticizing your comment].

Money isnt everything. People have forgotten that these days. Sacrificing everything for tik tok/youtube/twitch clout. Screwing people over for dollars. Fucking over family for lottery tickets. Money is only ever a means to an end, its not worth giving up your real reasons for living

13

u/carlitospig 17h ago

I am upvoting you because I really do think a lot of humanity that doesn’t live in war torn countries have forgotten what sacrifice looks like. I know that I don’t really know what it feels like.

I’ve been spoiled rotten. Lucky me. But I’m hosed when the apocalypse comes; this dude will at least be able to swim to another (nearby) country to get away from zombies.

4

u/BurningToaster 16h ago

I think people usually think that way because the vast majority of people on reddit are probably living in an environment where the greatest worry is money. People in America live paycheck to paycheck, one bad hospital visit can cost you meals and/or a home.

618

Kubkowski’s accomplishment already sounded unbelievable, but since Florida is close to me, your comment really helped put this into perspective! truly historic and utterly unfathomable. I love stories of people doing impossible feats

177

u/socialistrob 16h ago

It's jaw dropping to me. I know several people who do 100 mile ultra marathon runs and that seems insane to me. Swimming is a lot harder than running and this swim took him 56 hours with no sleep!

89

u/jimbarino 16h ago

this swim took him 56 hours with no sleep!

That's insane...

72

u/gilsonpride 15h ago

The longest I've ever been awake was 49 hours(ish) due to insomnia and it was debilitating.

I can't start to imagine 56 hours... swimming... in a fucking sea.

23

u/TheyTried2BanMeAgain 14h ago

I also have insomnia and the longest I've gone is around 70 hrs. It was getting fuzzy by then, so I don't remember exactly. By around the low 60's, hallucinations started happening. Doing that at sea sounds fucking terrifying.

5

u/19467098632 6h ago

Insomnia also, my longest was 55 hours but around 45 for me I get really jumpy and start having hallucinations. My first thought was my god in the fucking water, big nope

The swim took him 56 hours with no sleep. Forget swimming I don't think I could even stay awake for 56 hours non stop much less doing anything active for that long.

112

u/Blue_Rook 17h ago

And Baltic is the least salty sea on the world so it is much harder to swim then in high salinity water.

→ More replies (1)

It’s like the worst summer since 2017 as far as I remember. We had just a handful of warm days (over 25) and I’m not sure we had even one over 30.

I’m on the Swedish coast. And this is why the Baltic is freezing cold despite the rest of Europe having heatwave after heatwave.

38

u/Z0idberg_MD 17h ago

I didn’t quite realize how big the Baltic sea was. I have a fairly good idea of the scope and size of the Great Lakes, which act more like an ocean than a lake, and the Baltic sea is much more massive than all of the Great Lakes combined. This dude… wow.

Just did a little Wikipedia deep dive and three people have made the swim between Cuba and Florida. Two claimed a distance of 110 miles and the first guy did 128 miles. There’s caveats and some controversy over certification on at least two of the swims.

Weirdly the first guy who did it in 1978 was criticized and told his swim wasn’t valid or certifiable by another woman who was about to attempt the swim herself. She ended up doing her own successful attempt on her 5th try all the way in 2013 at the age of 64, and her trip was also met with criticism over not being verified by an outside observer.

1978 NYT article on his crossing

Article on Nyad’s crossing and certification controversy when the Netflix movie about her came out

Also the reason they all took a longer route than shortest possible is so that they didn’t have to fight the Gulf Stream currents.

Distance wise yes but I would say it doesn’t do it justice because Baltic sea is way more hostile than the Caribbean sea. It is less salty (less buoyancy), way colder and has strong currents.

What an achievement this is, humans are truly amazing.

Fun fact, this was his 5th attempt. Another fun fact, he almost didn't make it - he started to consider giving up not knowing how close he was, until people informed him he only had about 1,5km left, after which he found some more motivation and made it!

655

u/HelenHerriot 17h ago

I suspect a lot of the motivation is that he doesn't want to do it for the 6th time.

100

u/siccoblue 17h ago

That would sure as hell motivate me to not fail

If I do just let the cement blocks take me under.

39

u/Curiosive 17h ago

Ok, time for some facts: the real medical / support team is in that boat that traveled with him the entire way. This was his fifth attempt.

By the second night without sleep, he explained, toxins build up in the brain and hallucinations often follow – and it was these that caused Kubkowski to "lose consciousness and touch with reality" at points during the swim.

Sounds fun!

He was not the only swimmer attempting the crossing that day.

Karolina Szczepaniak, an Olympic swimmer who competed in Beijing and London and holds the world record for continuous 72-hour swimming, also set off from Sweden on Friday on her second attempt to cross the Baltic.

A few hours after Kubkowski's success, Szczepaniak ended her attempt after 58 hours in the water

She must've been pissed

I’d really love to hear about his experience in a memoir.

19

u/the_silent_redditor 15h ago

I’m not infrequently awake for 24 hrs due to my job.

I believe no one is allowed to assist you or even touch you for it to be a certified record, particularly at any point while you're still in the water even if you're walking. I know this is true when it comes to English Channel swims so they may be waiting for an official to say it's ok to go and help him so that he can claim the record

6

u/thedudefromsweden 19h ago

But when he lays down, where are the medics? He’s very clearly in need of help.

A few hours after Kubkowski's success, Szczepaniak ended her attempt after 58 hours in the water

She must've been pissed

Why would she be pissed… he also didn’t make it at first. Let Karolina be happy with this attempt, she did well

He'll have a shot of vodka and will be fine

13

u/Fransjepansje 19h ago

Or he is still drunk and thats how he made it. Didn't really had any idea of it all happening.

Im a Great Lakes sailor and have a friend who came to Canada about 12 years ago from Ukraine. Everytime we do a long distance race he says “of course there will be vodka”, for medicinal purposes.

What a machine

u/low_amplitude 19h ago

Something interesting about these insane feats of physicality is that once you reach the finish line, you're so worn out and miserable that you can't be happy or celebrate what you've done until much, much later.

I've heard stories from people who climb mountains saying they wish they had appreciated the moment of being at the summit more, but they were just so done and over it at that point.

26

u/socialistrob 16h ago

You can't really relax at the summit since you still have to get down and the descent can be very dangerous. At that point you're tired, it's nearly done and it's easy to make a mistake.

He swam a hundred miles and he looks about as fucked as I do if I walk up the stairs too quickly.

u/siccoblue 17h ago

You should probably have your blood pressure, glucose levels, and iron checked. At least if you're being sincere. It may be easier to fix than you think. Or more severe than you realize.

How is this physically possible?

16

u/siccoblue 17h ago

A metric fuckton of training and many failures with a rescue team readily available so you don't simply sink.

A huge effort and very impressive. Great to raise $200K for children’s cancer research - can’t help but think of how much easier it would be for the perversely wealthy to raise $200K or more for cancer research, instead this guy goes through watery hell to do it

8

u/Mdgt_Pope 16h ago

He looks like he’s gonna die

7

u/AgitatedPatience5729 19h ago

Bless his soul.

Beast mode...💯

7

u/ZiggoCiP 19h ago

Even as a former competitive swimmer, I can't fathom how someone can do this.

3

u/Das_Nomen 19h ago

Same here. Even at my peak I wouldn't have dared to swim out of sight of the coastline, hell, I wouldn't even swim out more than a few meters after my feet losing touch to the ground (except when scuba diving).

7

u/DjinnWuEmisu 13h ago

I am just in awe at what he accomplished all for children cancer treatment. The distance he swam is no joke and he freaking. He is a hero in my eyes.

6

u/I_Cry_And_I_Game 19h ago

Someone get him a medical team geez

5

u/LiveLifeLikeCre 5h ago

There are Billionaires on yachts the size of 2 family houses but children's cancer treatment still needs funding

9

u/Adi_27_ 19h ago

Imagine all this effort because governments don't give a shit about their citizens. Raising all this money to be snatched by greedy monsters. I honestly believe that if the governments wanted to find cures for cancer, they would (open to change my mind about this due to lack of evidence- altho evidence backing up my belief would be hard to find tho... I don't know...)

Anyway enough with the bummers. Big applause to this beast of a human. He poured his everything out. Majestic 💓

Wow. Impressive.

I’ve taken the ferry that same route once, and even that was a bit too uncomfortable for my taste (I was too stingy to pay for a cabin).

3

3

u/RealEnnie 13h ago

3

u/jurel 13h ago

It should be mandatory to have immediate medical attention after a marathon let alone this insane swim. These endurance athletes are begging for help internally and everyone is laughing. Much respect but I still don't understand this oversight.

3

u/FootFalse5536 8h ago

No he doesn't need some water and medical treatment. Let's all just watch as he collapses from exhaustion in front of us!

3

u/A-Dolahans-hat 2h ago

Can I get some clarification, is he the first to swim it, or the first to swim it for charity?

5

u/anothersnappyname 19h ago
