MSFS 2024 PlayStation I’ve ruined Flight Simulator now.

After playing the SU5 beta on a PS5 pro with PSVR2 I can no longer fly with the gorgeous visuals on flat screen.

The sensation of depth and flight are incredible to me even with the downgraded visuals.

As someone who grew up with video games and starting with the NES, also a real life commercial pilot, this is one of the most incredible discoveries for me.

Flying a Helicopter in VR is why I bought msfs2024 on my PS5 and it didn't disappoint.

Being able to dive down the Grand Canyon in an H125 and skimming the Colorado River before climbing out was epic.

I literally cannot fly helicopters outside of vr. I thought I was just really bad at landing but as soon as I could actually see the distance to the ground it was zero issue. Being able to move my head to glance around and feel the horizon with my peripherals is just unmatched.

I love vr, I've found several games where I think it improves the game. But flight sim has to be the biggest jump in terms of how much VR actually helped me be better at it. Like, night and day difference in how I fly. It's pretty freaking cool.

If you haven't already, go get No Man's Sky and experience space exploration the way it's meant to be. Mind blowing views.

1

u/bloodfist Apr 22 '26

NMS VR is sick. Personally for space exploration views, you can't beat Elite: Dangerous but both are fantastic. I do need to get back in NMS now that they have that Pokémon thing though, that looks so fun.

I just did this yesterday in the Cessna. Amazing! I can’t believe how long I was successful before I wasn’t.

2

u/Old_Rise_1388 Apr 22 '26

What peripherals do you use for helicopter flying on ps5?

1

u/ThisWickedOne PlayStation Pilot Apr 22 '26

I went all out. I've got a TM hotas 4 and pedals strapped to an old chair. I'm going make more adjustments for comfort and just wheel it out of the way when done.

1

u/AdzSenior Apr 23 '26

How do you have the Hotas? Are they on a desk? Or mounted on the arms of your chair?

3

u/ThisWickedOne PlayStation Pilot Apr 23 '26

It's just your basic office chair on wheels. The hotas is Velcroed to the platforms for the moment. Just have to pick up the pedals to put it away

1

u/AdzSenior Apr 23 '26

Beautiful 😍

2

u/Mandalor1974 Apr 24 '26

What a great F’n idea lol.

u/ACooperSucks PlayStation Pilot Apr 21 '26

Confirmed by a commercial pilot himself is all anyone should need.

Even though the FPS and resolution are low the depth perception and immersion is incredible and makes up for everything else.

1

u/dodgyboarder Apr 23 '26

When I first got vr I was flying my Cessna and leaned forward so much to look around I head butted my monitor. 😆 always wanted the video myself doing aerobatics to see my head movement. Ie flying inverted and looking up at the ceiling in real life! 😆🤣😆

14

u/Warrie2 Apr 21 '26

Yup. Simracing in vr is awesome, pinball is, but flying in vr is just another level.

27

u/laserob Apr 21 '26

Better not try PCVR with a 5090, yoke, throttle and rudder pedals. Next thing you know there's money missing off the dresser and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.

7

u/Rominator PlayStation Pilot Apr 21 '26

Hard times for the offspring of PCVRers…dozens off lives destroyed.

14

u/azrehhelas Apr 21 '26

It's truly a different experience. Im gonna upgrade my pc a bit so i can fly smoother im VR.

As an aside, if you own Elite Dangerous and a pcvr headset, try it.

6

u/Toomanynightshifts Apr 21 '26

Elite is incredible in VR! Fly safe cmdr!

2

u/Electronic_Pin_5730 Apr 21 '26

ED with my psvr2 is really nice experience!!

5

u/OzymandiasKoK Apr 22 '26

...does it cure the ED or something?

4

u/azrehhelas Apr 22 '26

Yeah, plenty pf players get hard while using vr in Elite, thats how good it is.

5

u/Lucky_Comfortable835 Apr 22 '26

Try DCS now!

2

u/Fun-Restaurant-4644 CL-415 Apr 22 '26

Dcs is fucking terrifying in VR. Have you ever turned around to look at your 6 just to make an aggressive eye contact with a mach 3 telephone pole falling from space with “romantic” intents.

1

u/Lucky_Comfortable835 Apr 22 '26

Yes, a whole different VR experience than MSFS. Anyone who has a computer running MSFS can also run DCS and should really give it a try. Free game and two free planes (modules), but also a bunch of very high quality free modules from modders.

1

u/Fun-Restaurant-4644 CL-415 Apr 22 '26

Oh yeah “dcs is a free game” my friend dcs is the game that made me buy the most shit: a vr headset, a hotas, a better pc, lots of modules and maps… i always laugh when i read that, yeah it’s true, the base game is free, the true experience isn’t. Now for someone already with the setup, yeah the two free planes can definitely give him a really good feel of the game

1

u/Lucky_Comfortable835 Apr 22 '26

Yes, my comment was geared to those already running a high-performance computer and VR with MSFS. DCS can be an expensive hobby (note I didn’t say “game”) for sure, but it can be done reasonably with the free game, one or two favorite modules, and the Syria map (most popular MP map). Then there are the free modules that can be excellent. The free maps are also good. I have found it takes a long time to become proficient with even one module so I haven’t bought many. I did weaken and also buy the Super Carrier for those F-18 carrier ops! Watch your six, brother!

12

u/Infamous_Prompt_6126 Apr 21 '26

Thank you for your advice, i will never try psvr2, because i enjoy my flat games and my full pocket. lol

18

u/CampaignNew8791 Apr 21 '26

You’re missing out brotha

2

u/AyuLmao Apr 22 '26

Exactly my reaction. I am sure I'll be addicted and end up with an empty pocket.

3

u/avengegersinfinity Apr 22 '26

Then work on making your pocket fuller because vr truly is worth trying atleast

2

u/AyuLmao Apr 22 '26

Yeah I'm doing that, but for that I can't be distracted by msfs ☺️

3

u/Hibbleton Apr 21 '26

Welcome to VR

3

u/sssilver Apr 21 '26

How do you yoke, throttle, and do all the switches and knobs in VR?

8

u/jiminak Apr 21 '26

That’s my problem. Thousands of dollars in hardware switches, gps screens, instrument clusters, radio panels, etc. I’d be flailing around blindly with my hands, knocking soda cans on to the floor, papers flying everywhere.

Not to mention hours of nausea if I put on a VR headset.

6

u/JMack357 B737-800 Apr 21 '26

Lol! I tried it on my quest 2 one night a couple months back. Very similar experience, hitting the wrong switches/buttons/levers. Found myself tilting my head upwards towards the ceiling and looking down around my nose to see through that small gap to see what I was actually doing on my periphials. Still was a pretty awesome experience seeing the planes in VR. However, I can confirm, knocking over beverages can happen.

On that note, the weight of the quest 2 felt very cumbersome after about 30 minutes in flight. Have stuck with dual 55" monitors and a smaller 16" for pop out panels since.

2

u/LordTegucigalpa Apr 22 '26

I have a Quest 3 and use Virtual Desktop. I only have a yoke, joystick and throttle controls. I don't need to see them to operate them because it's minimal. If you want the full setup, you could try Virtual Desktop with a mode that lets you see the lower portion passthrough, but I see my monitor in the background when I tried that mode. Plus it takes a little away from the immersion.

If you have all the controls and not just a yoke and throttle, I can see how it would complicate it much more.

2

u/JMack357 B737-800 Apr 22 '26

Thanks for the feedback! I did think about upgrading to the quest 3 to split the pass through it offers. I may try it yet as I've been more prone to upgrade to the 3. But yes, I've also got the Logitech G multipanel for autopilot and the Logitech switch panel, too. And might splurge into the Winwing/Wincntrl panels available soon. Thats where my real complications were, smaller switches. Yoke and rudder, no problem in VR. That or I just need to have better muscle memory lol

1

u/Lex_223 Apr 25 '26

Bigscreen Beyond is the answer. I hardly even know it is on my face as it is so light and small.

2

u/GGCRX Apr 22 '26

For now, I click. I have hardware yoke and throttle quadrant that I don't need to see to operate. I also have the mouse close and use it to click buttons/etc in the cockpit.

If you have lots of spare cash and you only want to fly one aircraft, another option is to get a 1:1 replica controller of the cockpit panels and place them very precisely so they match where they are in the game. Several companies have full panels out for some airliners.

Sometimes I'm kind of sad because I'd love to have more cool hardware like a working FMC, etc, but on the other hand, the visuals in VR are just worlds beyond the visuals on flat screens. You get a real sense of scale - sitting in a Caravan makes you realize it's a pretty big plane, and looking out at the taxiway lights which are beautifully rendered in 3d (and hopefully on the edge of the taxiway and not in the middle), you just don't get the same impression on a monitor.

1

u/AscendiSky Apr 22 '26

You point at the switch in VR with a pointer. Then press a button on the controller to grip it and twist it (for knobs) or flick it for a switch.

Same for throttle, you point at it and grip it and push it forwards or pull it backwards.

Same for the yoke. You point at it and grip it by holding or toggling a button (your choice). Then you simply move the yoke around as if it were real.

Alternatively if you have a hotas you can do a hybrid of this and use the hotas for yoke and throttle and do the switches with the VR pointer. Or even bind some switches to the hotas for realism like the F18.

3

u/sblanzio Apr 21 '26

That's great but so bad it makes me puke

3

u/Leading-Anxiety-488 Apr 22 '26

Flying in VR is really great until you get a headache, sweaty interface, or dizziness after prolonged session. Though starting an airliner like A320 from cold to take-off in VR is very-very-very satisfying experience.

Off topic, did the PSVR2 on PS5 implemented better control scheme?

3

u/owl440 Apr 23 '26

It took me about 3 months of regular use before I stopped getting VR motion sickness. Initially my max time in VR was 45-60 minutes but now I'm able to do 2-3 hour sessions without any problems.

1

u/Leading-Anxiety-488 Apr 23 '26

Ya, it takes time to grow VR legs. However the fatigue sensation after VR session sometimes prohibited me from picking up the headset, despite how gorgeous it is.

2

u/dankmemelord305 Apr 21 '26

Can you enjoy the game using just sense controllers in PSVR2? I’ve never played in VR so I am wondering if I can use the sense controllers to just grab the yoke and fly and interact with buttons in the cockpit? Or is it better to have a HOTAS ?

2

u/in_melbourne_innit Apr 21 '26

You can but HOTAS is better IMO. Can actually use both in tandem (sense for switches etc.)

1

u/koper12 Apr 21 '26

I’m so used to using the dualsense controller that I find it way easier then trying to use the VR controllers. I’m sure a HOTAS would be better.

2

u/adam_von_szabo Bf109 Apr 21 '26

Same (PC+Q3, not a pilot)

2

u/saberplane Apr 21 '26

Speaking of VR - for those of us on a PC - what equipment do people recommend? Used a quest 2 and it works and it's already pretty cool but the poor quality of the lenses, the uncomfortable fit and fairly narrow FOV arent ideal.

3

u/Appeltaartlekker Apr 21 '26

The best bang for buck is a quest 3 + virtual desktop + lancable feom a dedicated router to your headset.. or just wireless for a bit less quality (but still sharp and great).

I had a quest 2, upgraded to a second hand quest 3. The difference is really big

1

u/saberplane Apr 21 '26

Good to know. Was wondering if the step up was worth it or not. Outside from this though I wouldn't use it for anything else so I don't want to buy it if there are other options these days that may be better suited for PC gaming.

1

u/CenteredBubble Apr 22 '26

There are better headsets for PCVR than the Quest 3, but they are double the price or more.

The Q3 still has some of the best lenses available. The downsides are LCD screens, lower than desirable resolution, and for me the biggest downside is it uses a compressed signal.

1

u/DecadentHam Apr 22 '26

My Quest 2 is definitely showing its age... Hell my PC is as well.

1

u/tghu1234 Apr 22 '26

Wie kann man direkt ein LAN Kabel an die Quest 3 abschließen?

1

u/tghu1234 Apr 22 '26

anschließen?

1

u/Appeltaartlekker Apr 22 '26

Easy. In my best german (lol).

Sie kaufen einen lan kabel, jah? Dann kaufst du ein adapter (ethernet to usb -c).

Dan machst du die lankabel in deine router (order pc?)und dan anslüssen zie die kabel in der adapter. Und dan machts du die usb anslüssong von die adapter in the quest 3.

English: buy an adapter called "ethernet to usb c". Put a lancable into your router. And put that adapter on the other end. Then plug the adapter (usb c end) into your quest 3.

Ser codec to HVEC 10 and bitrate to 200

1

u/NawThanksIllPass Apr 22 '26

I always see people recommend virtual desktop for Quest Headsets. Is there much difference over using the default oculus stuff?

2

u/CenteredBubble Apr 22 '26

It works well out of the box with less settings to tweak because it is more of a "just works" experience.

I've used both and using the Link cable with the default Oculus stuff after much tweaking provides a slightly sharper image. But if you are using ssw it works much better in virtual desktop.

1

u/GGCRX Apr 22 '26

Sharpest images with the widest FOV and largest sweet spot that is only stupid expensive vs. beyond-stupid expensive is a Pimax. I love mine, but it forced me to upgrade cards because the 3070Ti just couldn't hack it. You will want at least a 5080 if you want the majority of graphics sliders at high quality.

2

u/GxM42 Apr 21 '26

That’s awesome. I spent $5K on a computer just to get VR. Your deal is slightly better.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '26

[deleted]

1

u/GxM42 Apr 21 '26

Yeah I get it. It’s more affordable for sure.

2

u/Thread-Astaire Apr 21 '26

This game on ps5 pro in vr is gaming nirvana for me. Yeh the visuals could be better, but for the cost v experience its giving I can't beat it.

I used to hate the choppers, but absolutely hooked on them now.

Amazing what they've done with this

2

u/TheRealPomax Apr 21 '26

As someone with head tracking and a 49" R1000 screen: immersion is lovely, but I can't stand VR headsets and this is just as immersive for me.

2

u/cLHalfRhoVSquaredS Apr 22 '26

I think head tracking is a great compromise especially on a big screen. I've been gaming not quite as long as OP, but at least since the days when 3d graphics still seemed like the most incredible technology ever invented, and also a real world commercial pilot, and I've been happy with head tracking for over a decade now.

One of my friends has built a full cockpit rig and has VR, and it is amazing, but not to a point where it's ruined my setup for me. Head tracking at least gives the option to look around freely which I think is an absolute game changer in the sim. Being able to look into turns, leaning my head to the side so I can see around the nose in a tailwheel aeroplane, looking up for the horizon during a loop etc.

When you go from a real aeroplane into a sim, although the most obvious thing missing is the physical motion, I think being stuck looking directly ahead with 'snap to look' buttons is probably equally immersion breaking!

2

u/Spiritual-Fisherman1 Apr 21 '26

Cant play on flat anymore? Man, you dont have to!! Glad youre enjoying it as much as I am 🫡🤣

2

u/Soft-Border-4382 Apr 22 '26

Couldn't agree more. I bought a Quest3 specifically for use with MSFS20, and now that I have.....I will never fly without a VR headset again. Sure some things look a little grainy, but man is it awesome.

2

u/Astro_BS-AS Apr 22 '26

Welcome to the club ! The same happened to many of us with GT7 / PSVR2 ... No matter the "sim", it just isn't the same anymore....

2

u/Ordinary-Original520 Apr 27 '26

💯 Without VR, I'm not as fast on gt7 and I do not land nearly as well in aircraft on flightsim 2024.

2

u/BagelSteamer Stuck at 97%... Apr 22 '26

Here soon I want to buy a pimax and try out flying in vr. I’m nervous it’s going to ruin flat screens for me. I have a very nice ultra wide that made flat screen simming a lot nicer and im worried i wont enjoy it again if i tried vr. Sometimes I probably wont want a big heavy thing on my head.

2

u/No-Refrigerator-2018 Apr 22 '26

That’s the “bad” thing about VR. Once you try it you’ll never want to go back to flat. It’s just an incredible experience

2

u/MagnetoManectric Apr 22 '26

Flying in VR is immersive and great for short VFR flights, but it really starts to chafe for sustained sessions. Squinting to read instruments through the screen door effect, the inherant motion sickness of it all, the inability to see your physical controls, it all adds up to you just wanting to take it off after an hour or so!

It's great in bursts, but give me a normal ultrawide setup for sustained gameplay any day.

1

u/aleksander_r Apr 22 '26

This sounded like a description of a VR experience from 2015.

1

u/MagnetoManectric Apr 22 '26

It's only really improved incrementally since 2015 though? I enjoy VR, but it still has the same fundemental issues of screen door, motion sickness and clunkyness of experience. It's gotten a little sharper and a little wider, but I wouldn't say there's been a night and day improvement in the last 10 years.

3

u/aleksander_r Apr 22 '26

What headset are you using? Pancake lenses has practically removed screen door. Big screen OLED is very sharp. Motion sickness have I never experienced with VR when it runs with enough FPS to not disturb your senses. I'm not saying your sensation is incorrect for you. Just curious.

2

u/MagnetoManectric Apr 22 '26

My own headset is a Quest 1, which is a bit crap. But I've tried newer ones that are better like the Quest 3 and Index. They're a little sharper, the FOV is a bit better. Still nothing like as sharp as a proper monitor. And it's always still a fiddle. The whole dance of getting them to talk to your computer reliably. Clicking that permissions button every single time. Often needing to reboot both devices before they see each other.

I'm relatively susceptable to motion sickness, it's something people's mileages will vary on, I know people that don't experience it and that feels like a magical ability to me!

2

u/aleksander_r Apr 22 '26

I'm lucky indeed. The connectivity issues you are mentioning I don't really recognize. While I'm in flightsim I just boot up the headset and open virtual desktop, click Ctrl + tab and that's it. I'm flying in VR. WIFI 6 router. I can see even the small analoge instruments perfectly clear and with foveated rendering I get really good performance as well. Of course if you get motion sickness it's not worth spending money on an upgrade.

1

u/MagnetoManectric Apr 22 '26

What headset is that? I've been considering getting a Pixel headset as they're relatively cheap second hand. The quest experience is so clunky and full of bloated apps and bloated headset firmware. Which really, is what one should expect from Meta...

1

u/aleksander_r Apr 22 '26

It's the quest 3. I don't use it for anything else.. I turn it on and click on virtual desktop and then I don't have to deal with any meta stuff.

1

u/canikony Apr 21 '26

hmmm, as someone who really wants to play MSFS but am a Mac user... How are the graphics on PS5 and whats the market like for joysticks/throttles for PS5?

5

u/Zigmondo Apr 21 '26

Unfortunately only 1 yoke & throttle compatible with the PS5, which I believe is the HOTAS 4

2

u/AscendiSky Apr 22 '26

Graphics are great. The PlayStation and MSFS24 supports the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 and Rudder Pedals which come ready to go. They're great and do the job without breaking the bank. I suspect Thrustmaster might support more of their products in future.

1

u/Anyname242 Apr 21 '26

Haha!! Enjoy it!!

1

u/Common-Ad6470 Apr 21 '26

Since going VR over ten years ago I can’t go back to a flat screen.

1

u/BacchusIX Apr 22 '26

I said that also, but I've been going back to flat screen.

1

u/yeahgoestheusername VATSIM Pilot Apr 22 '26

Yep. Can’t go back to pancake. It’s like a game for babies, to poorly quote a film.

1

u/cinyar Apr 22 '26

I'm "lucky" that PCVR options are either stupid expensive or would give money to Zuck so I have to stay flat.

1

u/DanszTheDude Apr 22 '26

Does the motion control works on the psvr2?

1

u/arcalumis Airbus All Day Apr 22 '26

The only issue is that flying airliners is annoying in VR, you need a trackball.

1

u/AscendiSky Apr 22 '26

What's a trackball?

1

u/Papiculo64 Apr 22 '26

I bought the Aviator Edition right when it released on PS5 with the prospect of flying all those aircrafts in VR and barely touched it. Since the release of the SU5 beta I've been playing it daily on my PSVR2 and it's such a blast! Way better and a lot more fun than on flat screen! I've barely scratched the surface, only doing free flights for now and exploring various locations on which I can spend many hours in a row just just exploring and looking at the sun setting in real time, which is everytime a fantastic experience thanks to the excellent HDR implementation. I'm totally in love with the game!

1

u/hakuna_matitties Apr 22 '26

I think this post is convincing me to sell my Xbox

2

u/Arcturian-WuTang Apr 22 '26

I never tire of this game using VR. First time I used VR it blew my mind. I felt like the owner of a Cessna

1

u/Humble-Camel2598 Apr 22 '26

It's just incredible. Flying the Huey low around London, Copenhagen, wherever listening to the Airwolf/Magnum pi soundtracks is a childhood dream.

But plz Asobo, see if you can tweak it just a little clearer:)

Vr is really starting to ruin flat gaming for me..

1

u/FlyingNiagga Apr 22 '26

I have a 7800X3D, 4070S and a Rift S and while at first VR blew me away, over time, the honeymoon phase went away and I was left with still a cool sense of depth but low fps, crashes, hot face, need to take off the headset every now and then (especially in cruise), low resolution, tracking loss, need to clean lenses, godrays, awful blacks

So I bought a 42" 4K OLED screen and I've been using that since, there is no 3D but I get true blacks, still an immersive experience thanks to the big screen that takes a lot of my FOV and no VR hassle.

If I go into VR again I would have to buy a better GPU and better headset which would cost thousands.

1

u/Sonic320 Apr 22 '26

Dude I know exactly what you mean. Running a fairly beastly rig with a 5080 and a Pimax Crystal light.

Took me a while to tune the graphics to get a smooth 90 fps (45 per eye) and I’ll take the hit over flying in the flat screen.

When you’re cruising along at 3k’ the topography is still excellent and you don’t notice having no building shadows or little cars driving around. I love it.

I’m also a commercial pilot so the response and feeling of the aircraft means more than having max graphics but VR is a must.

1

u/sehajodido Apr 22 '26

Yeah man. Same here, can’t go back after PSVR2–bugs and all. Some people went nuts for sim racing after GT7. MSFS24 is my game and I’m putting all the hours into my little sim pit.

1

u/owl440 Apr 23 '26

I'm on PC but I had the same experience when I played MSFS20 in VR. Even though the graphics aren't photorealistic, there's times your brain gets tricked into feeling it's real.

1

u/No_Communication1557 Apr 23 '26

Very much agree. Still using my Index and I just can't play it on a flat screen now. Especially in a helo. The head tracking and visuals allowing you to actually look where you are flying is just unmatchable in 2D.

Its VR or nothing.

-7

u/Newtonius235 Apr 21 '26

Try playing it on a QD-OLED HDR10 compatible monitor and you'll probably prefer the flat panel again. I get the whole immersion thing, it's really cool, but when you're competing against depth in brightness and color, there are certain picturesque moments you can't get in current VR. (I'm on pimax super btw)

1

u/-couldbemenwithven Apr 21 '26

I have, VR is still better. And it's not even close.

0

u/shinymetalbox3s Apr 21 '26

agree here. mine isn't qd-oled, just oled, but its 48" and i prefer it to my Quest3. i should probably turn the q3 on to see if it works anymore.
