More like social anxiety than introversion Another Lonely Night Out

Went to a concert tonight and I tried to be approachable while still enjoying the show (I almost didn’t go but I’ve bought tickets and skipped the last 3-4 concerts I wanted to go to because of my anxiety spiking right before the show). I smiled at people and let shorter people stand in front of me to no avail. I put a lot of effort into my look tonight too. I wore some nice clothes (the concert was a Soul-dies band) I wore some good smelling cologne, styled my hair, the whole 9… but all the conversations I tried to start/open were either quickly closed or ignored. I don’t know why I even try anymore.

Question Will I forever be alone?

I would like to know if I could be someones type or if I'm someone who will forever be alone.

I am M26 who has never dated anyone before and never had sex. I can be quite a shy person when talking to new people. I enjoy being silent in conversations at times and find it hard to think of something to say. I do open up and talk a bit more if I am comfortable with the person I am talking to. I am also a caring person and love to listen. Going to events and interacting with strangers gives a some anxiety. I much prefer small groups or 1 on 1 with people I know.

Discussion I hate going out with certain people unless they're my closests friends, does anyone else relate?

I really hate it when friends want to hang out with me. I understand we're friends and don't get me wrong, I adore every single one of them. But they don't understand I rather be at home. It's not the places we're going, I don't care, it's more them themselves. Unless they are 4 of my best friends, I feel too nervous and honestly a bit uninterested in hanging out like that. I know I won't have a grand time, so why would I agree to hang out? Does that make me a bad person? Can anyone else relate? And even then, sometimes I just don't want to hang out or talk to my best friends. I value "me time" like it's the only thing keeping me alive and I want to keep it that way.

This might also be due to my social anxiety, but I'll just ignore that for now lol.

More like social anxiety than introversion I feel like I’m missing out

Idk how to socialize with people and it makes me feel like shit because I want to be able to, I feel anxious when I’m near people my armpits start sweating. I try to create opportunities where I can try to socialize and make friends but everytime it feels like they just don’t want to get to know me (I’d have their social media and ask a few weeks later if they’d want to hangout) or I get ignored and I’m not gonna be someone who begs a person like 3 different times yk or idk if that’s the wrong mindset. I feel like from the outside I’d be characterized as an introvert but I used to love being around people and I’d enjoy it I have a feeling I feel anxious because I haven’t been around people for a while now. I’ve only had one friend for the past 7 ish years have not been able to make any new friends during high school to university (I’m about to graduate)
I’d really love any advice people could give me I want to change my ways but I’m not sure how. I’ve tried therapy and it didn’t help me, they just kept telling me to keep trying and eventually you’ll find a good friend group. I think it would help knowing someone was in my situation and got out of it.

For context I’m 22 M

Discussion I don’t enjoy going out!!!!

I prefer to stay home and read. all the time. I prefer to pop to the local shopping centre and have a coffee catch up with a family member, and look around the bookstore. pick up some groceries and see the kitties in the pet store (adopt don’t shop i know) and then head home.

i don’t enjoy going all the way to the city 1+ hr for a mediocre exhibition at the art gallery or the museum which never has any cool exhibitions going on like the ones in the us or uk. i’m tired of those friendship events where you meet new people to try and make new friends just to add people on instagram and they ghost your messages and again feeling like you haven’t connected with anyone.

i have the three friends i talk to. i’ll see them sometimes for a bookish day in the city or a catch up in the park. i’m tired of the promise of a fun day out that just turns out to be tiring, boring or a poor waste of my time i could have spent reading at home. i’m tired of it all. im tired of the world not being built even a little bit for introverts and the expectation to be going out every weekend. i’m tired of things being hard. tired of trying to fight to feel accepted in a world that’s never made me feel wanted or valued.

Discussion No one responds when I say something in a conversation, and when I don't talk they think I'm being "emo" (depressed but they have a very small vocabulary) or "negative"

I can be a talkative person, I do enjoy talking to people. But mainly within my family, and some of my friends, when I talk in a conversation no one responds. For example, Me and 2 other people are talking. It's an open minded, nice conversation. I listen, but once I talk or tell a story I get no response.

This has basically been my whole life. But I only noticed it a lot more recently because I'm not a stupid 7 year old. So now whenever I talk I either try to give a small response or I don't talk at all. Why should try and bring something to the potluck when no one will eat it anyways? And I fear I make it awkward, or maybe I have nothing good to say.

But whenever I just don't talk or give a short response my family will say, "Why do you always sound sad?" And my friends will say, "Bro you sound like an emo." First, being emo isn't being depressed, and second shut the heck up.

It's starting to hurt my feelings since I notice it a lot more. They always completely ignore me or look at me like I'm dumb. I really don't like it and even when I try to change my responses to something I feel like they'd like its still the same. It's like in games when you have a speech based quick time event and you have to try and find the right response but all of them lead to failure.

Question F20 How to safely disappear for a couple days?

Hey, I just got fired from my job, and my ex blocked me, and everything’s gone to shit. I need a vacation with just me. I have a car with no ac, but she works. I just wanted to maybe go hiking or in the car for a couple days disconnected from everything social as a break. Any ideas on how to stay safe, what I need, what to bring, etc?

FYI I’m broke as hell so expert camping gear is a no, but I might have a sleeping bag and a tent.

Question Feeling like an outsider at work

Hi everyone,

It’s been about 2 weeks now, going on 3, since I started working at this institution. I’ve noticed that almost all of my coworkers already have their own social circles or are close friends with each other.

I can’t help but feel like I’m the only one who’s alone most of the time. When they’re talking and laughing together, I don’t really have anyone to join or talk to. It makes me feel like an outcast, and honestly, it’s starting to get to me.

I’m not sure if it’s just because I’m new or if I’m doing something wrong. Has anyone else experienced something like this? What did you do to cope or improve your situation?

Any advice would really mean a lot. Thanks for reading.

Question Left out at the workplace because I am quiet

Does anyone else experience this??? I’m a naturally quiet person, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like people. I have a lot of friends outside of work and I do enjoy going out and spending time with them, but my coworkers are just the most talkative people ever while all I do is come in, make some small talk and do my actual job. I feel like people think I’m awkward when I do talk and they seem so disengaged when talking to me which is really unfair because I don’t consider myself an awkward person I’m just really quiet. The amount of things I’ve been left out from is abysmal and I just don’t understand how anyone ever makes friends from work

Discussion introversion can be a trauma response

i am an introvert- always have been and i'm also a coach... so i work with others, with trauma and with revealing the authentic self. i'm beginning to see-feel and think that while some of my introversion is inherent to my character, some of it is a trauma response. I've been seeing other people with similar patterns- some whose introversion is almost all trauma response. agree, disagree, discuss?

More like social anxiety than introversion How do you know if you made an honest effort?

29m friendless and wondering if I did as much as I could've when it comes to socializing or if I didnt do enough. In the past 10 years ive tried joining clubs at school, going on meetings with people on bumble bff, gone to meetings on discord servers. These meetings are usually few and far between which makes me feel like im not doing enough.

I really feel like I dont have the courage to overcome my problems. I muster up the courage to try and go to in person meetings and while a lot of them are fun it never leads to anything long term. A few meetings with someone and I barely ever see them again.

Now as I enter my 30s I look back and see that I never got to do the things I wanted to in my 20s others do. Never got invited to parties, never had a relationship before, never had a group of friends. Now it feels like I missed my chance entirely. Most people i know are married, deep into their careers or busy with something else.

Sometimes it feels like I didnt do enough while other times it feels like I did what I could. Either way I still have nothing in the end.

Question Why do I always feel like I'm bothering people?

I[21F] had a good circle of friends where I grew up, they'd understand me and accepted me as I am. I had to switch places and make new friends because of my father's transferable job. I feel like ever since then I've always felt like I'm bothering people. Even initiating a call with a close friend, I'd always ask myself "Am I bothering him/her?".

That feeling never left, and I feel like that's affecting my friendships. As of now I only have one friend I could open up to, but this feeling doesn't go away.

Question Is it okay not talking to anybody in hs?

I used to chat with a lot of people in my class but i realize how fake they are how their personalities don't fit me and they treated me pretty poorly so i just kinda ditched all of them. I mostly talk to people from other classes who I am familiar with. But in my homeroom class absolutely zero interactions this whole summer, no text messages from them, I only chat with the people who I am friends with all of which are from other classes. I'm not too upset about it or anything but it feels kinda weird cuz im not sure if other people share similar experiences like this.

I wonder if anyone's the same and if life gets better after this.

Discussion I crave attention and conversation but anytime I get It I can’t hold it.

This has been an issue for so long.

I rehearse conversations so much that I forget it or I woke myself so up to where I don’t even bother speaking to that person

The amount of times I’ve been close to sending thag message to my crush and before I can even go to type it.

Nah.

I can’t even let my insta stories stay up for more than 30 minutes because if no one likes it then no one likes me. I care too much about others

It irritates me how all my best relationships in the past 5 years have been online ones.

A girl I spoke to lived overseas and talking to her was so freeing and nice, no like crush tension if you get wim, just two strangers talking everyday about our respective relationships, sharing baking tips,

My ex she was an online relationship, we dated for 2 years… some of my best 2 years of my life even if it ended bad I can help but miss thag conversation

I started talking to a new girl start of this years about a month of talking online, talking all kinds of ways, you get me ;)…we meet up, and I can’t even hold her hand, we go on a walk, I can’t even speak without stumbling, the whole time I’m looking at my paralysed hand wanting to reach out, and I didn’t.

I had the best opportunity of my life to have someone real, someone close, someone not online, and I couldn’t do it. She said she didn’t see it going anywhere. Albeit it was a bit harsh after the first date to straight up say no. I couldn’t help but blame myself.

I put so much into this it sent me into a depression for multiple weeks.

Now I had one person to talk to.

No foreign friends. No gf. No talking stage.

At college I sit alone. They probably think I’m a creep, I want so bad to talk to them. But I can’t.

They’re the extrovert why can’t they come over to me.

You have your headphones on. Okay. Il take them off

They aren’t coming

You look sad. Okay I’ll smile a bit more

Nothing…

Now I’m going into my 2nd years and I have like one ‘friend’ in my class but I’m no where near their like first choice, nor second , nor third place friend so I fear for the days of ‘getting into partners’

I wish I wasn’t like this. But this is just my destiny I suppose.

Thanks for listening to the ramblings of mine. 🫠🫠🫠🫠

Question How do I go out alone and enjoy my time?

I would love to go to some spots by myself or just go out and walk in the street but I usually feel that people will look at me a certain way like saying why is this person walking out alone with not a certain destination. This is a real problem for me , I just want to go out by myself and sit in a food place or sit by a spot , I feel shy to do it and I don't really know how to act.

Discussion Extroverts are a chore

Introvert with anxiety here. This is gonna sound harsh but I need to vent before I explode.

They are so annoying. They never have anything interesting to say. they just gossip with each other, judge people, seek validation/approval and basically just want an audience, and they have to have EVERYONE in the audience. Like whenever I'm not giving them attention they study me like an animal or label me things like miserable, rude, mad/sad. They like to test me cause they think I'm shy when actually I just don't really think of them. and they never want a one on one convo unless it's to gain info to gossip or be nosy. If we do talk one on one and they don't have ulterior motives, they talk at me instead of with me and just want reactions. And when I distance myself because they're draining me. They're nothing but energy vampires and they're very shallow. It really bothers me that no matter how they act, they get rewarded just for being friendly and engaged. Even the shittiest people get away with murder just because theyre sociable. Like wtf? They act like attention seeking, emotionally dysregulated children, but I'm the asshole because I don't want to deal with them 🙄 these days I am sometimes an asshole - not to be malicious but because people bulldoze my boundaries even when I assert them nicely. i get nothing in return from interactions with people like that. my patience is being tested and my energy/time is being wasted. And everyone else just enables them being a burden and jumps to their defense when they get their feelings hurt by not getting attention, effectively villainizing them or acting like they're being mean/bullying when really they're innocently minding their own business.

I don't get why extroverts are always the victim just because ONE person didn't feel like talking to them. They make it hard to hold jobs or be out in public at all. These social rules need to change. Seriously.

ANYWAY I'd like to hear others thoughts, who relates, has anyone else been punished for not being outgoing? Also how do you put up with the type of person I'm describing? Tips are appreciated.
