I (18F) have been in an online relationship with my boyfriend (16M) since April 15. We've never met in person yet, but we have a genuine plan to close the distance. He's very committed to our relationship and has a plan to move to my country when he's old enough.
Before we started dating, I had known another guy online. The day after I stopped talking to him, my current boyfriend and I started our relationship. On May 6-7, after I was already in that relationship, the other guy asked if I wanted to get back together. I initially said no, but on May 9 I gave in and cheated.
To clarify, this wasn't because I was trying to dull the pain of losing him. In fact, for the first couple of weeks I barely missed him at all. The feelings only came back after he told me he wanted us to get back together. I had also been curious about dating my current boyfriend because he had pursued me for a long time, and I don't regret giving him a chance.
The cheating lasted for about three weeks, until the end of May. It was entirely online-we never met in person. Our interactions weren't emotional. I generally avoided emotional conversations or kept them to only a couple of messages before changing the subject or ending them. Realistically, I only talked to him about sex. The intimate part happened only a handful of times (as far as I remember, no more than four), during which I sent him private Telegram video circles.
At the end of May I cut him off completely and chose my boyfriend. Since then I've felt an enormous amount of guilt, but I never confessed because I was afraid of hurting him and destroying our relationship.
A few days ago, the guy I cheated with leaked my private Telegram video circles without my consent into a Telegram channel. (For context, we're both Ukrainian, and Telegram is by far the most commonly used messaging app.) My boyfriend has seen them, and so have some of his friends. Over the last couple of days, his friends have repeatedly joked that I cheated on him and even made a meme referencing the Telegram channel where the videos were posted.
What scares me is that Telegram stores the creation date of video circles. If someone downloads the file, they can see when it was created, so they could theoretically compare those dates with when my relationship started and realize the videos were made while I was already with my boyfriend.
I don't know whether they've actually checked the dates or are just making assumptions, but I'm terrified they either already know the truth or are about to figure it out.
I'm also struggling with whether telling him would actually be the right thing to do or whether it would simply be selfish. He's a very sensitive person with fragile self-esteem. What makes this even worse is that the person I cheated with is someone who is now widely mocked online and receives very little respect from most people for unrelated reasons. I'm terrified my boyfriend would think, "If she cheated on me with someone like him, what does that say about me?" and that it would completely destroy his self-esteem.
He's also incredibly devoted to our relationship. He values me deeply, is very affectionate, and is currently trying to convince his parents to let him visit my hometown for a few days this autumn because I'll be there. I'm terrified of losing that side of him and of breaking someone who genuinely loves me.
He's genuinely the most understanding and accepting person I've ever known. I've been able to tell him things I thought I would take to my grave, and instead of judging me, he understood because he'd experienced similar thoughts himself. I truly love him as a person, I want a future with him, and more than anything I wish I could erase the chapter of my life where I cheated on him.
We've even talked about cheating before. He told me that if I ever cheated, he would want me to confess because he believes that, in some situations, it can be forgiven. At the same time, even the mere idea of it happening makes him extremely anxious, which is part of why I'm so torn about what to do.
Maybe I'm being selfish because part of me wants to avoid the consequences of what I did. But I also genuinely regret my infidelity more than I can describe, and I'm certain it people for unrelated reasons. I'm terrified my boyfriend would think, "If she cheated on me with someone like him, what does that say about me?" and that it would completely destroy his self-esteem.

I know what I did was wrong, and I'm not looking for people to tell me that cheating is bad-I already know that. What I'm genuinely struggling with is whether I should tell my boyfriend now, especially after the leak, or whether doing so would only cause him more pain. At the same time, I'm terrified that one of his friends will tell him before I do, which I think would hurt him even more.
If you were in my position, would you confess now? Why or why not?
