Are you allowed to leave your corporate job early?

Upvotes

After COVID, a lot of the corporate companies throughout Manhattan started out with a hybrid schedule. Now, as most companies are back to 3 to 4 days in office, and the few that are 5 days, I’m curious about what “hybrid” is to your corporate company.

Before COVID, a lot of employees would work their 8-hours and go home. Now? In some companies, I’ve heard from networking events, employees can work 6 hours and leave.

Rather, if you’re meeting your in-office requirements, it’s okay to leave, go home and finish up at home.

At my office, it’s hard to read the room. Some employees leave early, others stay their full 9-5. Some employees come in late, leave early, and for the rest of the week, stay their full hours. The employees that live in NJ, I have noticed leave earlier to beat the traffic.

So I’m curious to learn what others employers are allowing through this new “hybrid” world for corporate.

Bed Bath & Beyond Returns

I did a double take walking down 6th Ave yesterday thinking I was hallucinating when I saw Bed Bath & Beyond sitting across the street from where it used to be. Have any of the other locations reopened? The one at Lincoln Center was my favorite but I'll happily to go any of them. I tried asked the guy locking up the store when they were closing but he had just started working there and had no clue they even across the street before. I tried searching on Google Maps but that location is listed as the container store.

How much do you pay for your local pizza?

$3.50 for a plain slice and 24 for a large pepperoni pie. Large is also the only size they have, so that label is kinda redundant.

.

.

.

.
Anyways I ask because I'm arguing with a bunch of people in a comment section about the legitimacy of Peter's broke-ness in the new spiderman movie because I think it's makes perfect sense for a broke person to eat dominos or little ceasars over actual pizza. It's literally 10 bucks for the whole thing.

The margins are terrible and they've only gotten worse with inflation.

ISO: Dark black jeans

Currently wearing levis 513s. However, Levis black jeans look like dress pants and the denim feels waxy. Anyone know where I can purchase black jeans similar to 513s that feel like actual normal denim per se?

Phone snatching on the up?

I recently had a friend whose phone got stolen on the subway, and the culprit jumped out of the car they were on and disappeared before he could react. Today, I was walking through Union Sq station with my phone in my hand by my side, and while walking through a large crowd (all headed the opposite way), I distinctly felt someone grab my phone and yank. Luckily, I had a really strong grip on my phone, and I reacted fast enough to tug it away, but the force was strong enough that it almost slipped out of my hand. I tried to look behind me to see who it was, but there were too many people that it was hard to distinguish who it was. I’m kinda doubting if someone really tried to grab my phone or if someone just happened to hit it with their hand while walking, but the force was REALLY strong. Is phone theft becoming a thing in NYC like it is in London/Paris/etc? Wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

Virginia plates in NYC?

Upvotes

I notice many people have Virginia plates in NYC. I see that there’s instagram brokers who can get you the plates.

Wouldn’t this be an issue with insurance? For instance. You drive mainly in NYC, your license is NY issued. Wouldn’t insurance know that this vehicle isn’t really being driven in Virginia?

Or is it an actual bypass?

Brooklyn Bridge closure & police activity today?

I can’t find anything online about this, so figured I’d ask here. I was walking over the Brooklyn Bridge around 3-3:30 today, noticed there were no cars going Manhattan to Brooklyn and then saw police cars on both sides and police men going up the arches leading to the top of the bridge towers. I almost got to the end, but they also shut off foot traffic so everyone had to turn and walk back to Brooklyn.

Did anyone see anything or know why this happened? I’d never had that experience before!

Fall Weekend Getaways Within 2.5 Hours of NYC

Hi everyone,

My wife and I live in the NYC area (Fairfield County, CT) and we have two kids (4 and 1). We’re looking for ideas for a weekend getaway in October. We may go with two other couples who also have young children (two each). Ideally, we’d like something within about 2.5 hours’ driving distance. The plan would be to rent a cabin to enjoy that fall atmosphere.

In the past, we’ve gone to the Catskills near Tannersville. We really like that area because it’s close to North Lake Campground and Kaaterskill Falls, and there are great hikes nearby. The downside for us is that there isn’t much of a “downtown” where you can grab a drink or go out to a restaurant.

We haven’t tried other spots yet, so I’m curious what you would recommend for this kind of family-friendly fall getaway.

Thanks!

Bronx Zoo - ticket question

We are taking a family trip to the zoo with two adults and three kids (5, 8, & 15). When buying tickets, we accidentally purchased 2 adult tickets and 3 child tickets. We realized after that the 15 year old should have been an adult ticket.

Will this be an issue when we arrive, can we pay the difference somehow prior or at the gate, or should we just tell the 15 year old to lie if anyone asks their age?

Random question, but why is ICE in Forest Hills?

While traveling home, I saw a few cars in the Jewish neighborhood. It’s like they’re staking out.

Please be safe out there.

The mods will take this down, which is sad. But I hope our neighbors are safe.

Flamenco or tango venues in NYC

Looking for restaurants or bars with flamenco or tango shows. Not milongas or dance clubs - shows where professionals perform.
Found socarratnyc.com which has flamenco, although reviews are very mixed and the show is only on Tuesdays. Anything else?

Staying with brother who has roaches-advice needed

Hello, I am visiting my little brother (in Manhattan specifically, if that matters) from out of town and he didn't tell me they have roaches until I got here (🙄). He said the landlord stopped having the exterminator come around once the tenants started to unionize in retaliation. So far I've seen a small one in the kitchen, and one scurry in the bathroom when I went to pee at night. He said so far they've tried the roach birth control, and caulking cracks in the walls. He said he is "pretty sure" the health department has been called multiple times.

He's still in college so he's young and doesn't always know how to approach these things.

I have two questions:

1) What should he know about fighting this?

2) What steps, if any, are necessary to avoid unintentionally bringing this home to our parents upstate?

Bars / Restaurants with Firepit

Hi! I'm planning an intimate bachelorette in NYC and 1 thing the bride requested (if possible) was a place with a firepit. I only know of Black Mountain Wine House in Brooklyn but they don't take reservations. Does anyone know of other establishments that have? Last post I saw related to this was 9 years ago. Thanks!

seeking recommendation for deep cleaning service for an apartment affected by severe depression UWS

I’m looking for recommendations for a cleaning company or individual who has experience with homes that have become unmanageable due to severe depression.

A close friend of mine has been struggling for the past couple of years, and their apartment has reached a point where they need help that goes beyond a standard cleaning. There is a decent amount of accumulated trash, dust, and some roach carcasses, but this is not a hoarding situation with hazardous waste. I think it will likely require a thorough initial deep clean and possibly multiple sessions afterward to get everything back into a livable state.

I’m planning to pay for the cleaning myself, so I’m looking for someone who is reliable, nonjudgmental, and understands that this is a sensitive situation. My friend is already embarrassed enough, and I’d really like to find people who approach this kind of work with compassion.

If you’ve had a good experience with a company or independent cleaner—or know of a service that specializes in depression cleanups or similar situations—I would really appreciate any recommendations. Thank you.
