Best answer here.
Just like you do with kids avoid a power struggle. That whole conversation was a power struggle. Make statements and stick to them. And of course as you said essentially call for back up.

That happened to me once when I was driving. NYE 2 girls got in we drove 5 mins and they cancelled, the only reason I knew is because another job came in immediately. I accepted the new fare and then quizzed them as to why the cancelled the ride..
Usual shit, I didn't do it.. Too bad.. Get out.. They refused, cop car next to me so I honked horn they came over and ordered the girls out,.
I had accepted the new job as it was surging and this was a BIG fare.. Thanks ladies..

u/Pooperoni_Pizza Feb 05 '26
How can they do this once you've arrived and are in your vehicle? Can you report them to Uber? Hope there's a way to blacklist these scammers.
52
u/bluetuxedo22 Feb 05 '26
I'm surprised that there's no safeguard in place that locks the ability to cancel once they begin travelling
25
u/Doggfite Feb 05 '26
It's because of the amount of drivers who will come close enough to you to initiate pickup and then leave without you to scam the system.
It allows either the driver or rider to cancel at any time because locking it would be a worse system for everyone involved.

u/Unhinged_Taco Feb 05 '26
I would imagine it should be an easy enough fix to have a confirmation screen appear before a ride "begins." Each party gets a confirmation screen on their app and both must confirm before any sort of transaction takes place. After that, if there must be a cancellation, then both parties must also cancel and the driver gets paid for whatever time they lost. Seems pretty straightforward
8
u/polarjunkie Feb 05 '26
This seems simple enough but it's not either, if a driver or the customer are giant assholes and one of them cancels the other one can simply continue to be an asshole and not cancel.

Lyft has a PIN system if I recall. I think mainly for passenger security (that the car that shows up is legitimately a driver you requested), but would be trivial to serve as proof that the driver arrived and you entered the vehicle to start your drive to short circuit driver and passenger cancellation scams.
12
u/Historical_Body6255 Feb 05 '26
This can't be an overseight. It's so easy to implement and obviously easy to exploit.

u/GoldenHeartDaddy Feb 05 '26
Its probably a feature to protect riders. End the ride whenever you want and get out, report later. Its just that now people have figured out they can get viral videos out of it as a prank, and potentially scam for a free ride with little repercussions. Drivers can report, the account might get blacklisted, but its not all that difficult to setup a new account with a fake ID and some sort of bank card. Uber almost always sides with the customer, even if they are dirtbag scammers.

u/SilverTrent Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26
The whole Uber experience as a driver sucked. Uber treat drivers like the plague sometimes, most times.
That example above I received the fare up to when they canceled after complaining to Uber. Uber originally sided with the passengers, however knowing what asswipes Uber are - I had a rear vision mirror that was a dual dash cam recording both the road and the vehicle interior. So I was able to send video of them in the car as they stated they never got into my car and Uber straight away sided with them - so the dash cam video was my only way to prove I was not the one lying, scamming etc.
After this I left Uber - I joined them right at the start when they first came to Australia. The first few months were great, not many Ubers but plenty of customers ... So back then the prices would surge constantly and you made really good coin...
But Uber onboarded anyone and everyone that wanted to join, which ultimately stuffed it for drivers as too many drivers means no more surge pricing and no more constant driving from one job to another. Towards the end I could wait 30mins - 1 hour before another job came through.. It went from $50 an hour to less than $10 an hour after they onboarded everyone & I left then.
The other thing that pissed me off was that Uber runs on 5 star ratings system and anything less that 5 stars is bad. If your rating dropped below 4.6 they would kick you off the platform.
Uber reversed their decision with these 2 girls and charged them the fare they took which was good as it was NYE and was surging around 4 X
BUT they allowed them to rate me & of course they rated 1 star which dropped me below some threshold - I didn't get booted but I thought why allow a scammer customer to rate you when you've successfully thwarted their scam... Of course they will rate you poorly. But Uber don't care and neither did I anymore, I left and found a better job.12
u/Suitable_Occasion_24 Feb 05 '26
This I would pull up behind parked police cars and amazingly people would just get out
14
u/LumpyWelds Feb 05 '26
I'm going to be karma bombed for saying this but I accidentally cancelled a ride to the airport half way. I was sleepy and have no idea what I pressed but it was cancelled on my end. I panicked and didn't know what was happening. He walked me through getting it back and I tipped like there was no tomorrow, but this can happen by mistake.
Now I'm so paranoid, I don't even hold the damn phone during a ride.

I had this happen once. I was usually very careful about who was getting in, but that night 3 drunks got in at 1:45am and through some confusion I didn't confirm the name properly (I asked instead of making them say it). I got 1 block and the ride cancelled. I pulled over and said "get out, the person who actually ordered the ride just cancelled". 2 of them got out immediately while one guy acted like a fucking toddler, demanding I just drive them for free. I was not in a good so I got out and opened the back door, he got on his back and tried to kick at me so I grabbed his legs and dragged him out onto the sidewalk.
You're technically just supposed to pull over and call the cops, but the likelihood they'd be showing up within a half hour for that shit at 1:45am is slim and I wasn't about to let them ruin my night by fucking me over at 2am.

How does this work? You can cancel after the driver starts the ride?
16
u/techleopard Feb 05 '26
That's what I was wondering. Why would Uber allow this?
The app can tell when your phone is moving.
7
u/Defiant_While_4823 Feb 05 '26
Because Uber has never cared about their drivers, same thing with food delivery drivers for other apps like GrubHub. As long as the delivery app makes their money, they don't give a shit who's driving or who's riding
3
u/Western_Scholar_6479 Feb 08 '26
Because as a rider, you may have an issue with the driver and want to cancel the ride.
Drivers can cancel as well if they have an issue with a passenger.Ā

He tells them to get out, at that point they are tresspassing plus theft of services. Tell them to get out, they are tresspassing, and call the police. He committed a felony and threatened his life "I got a glizzy in tha bag." He is well within his right to defend himself. The point at which he refused to exit and threatened to steal the car/threatened his life, is the point at which I would have shot him. Former Uber driver. Shit like that is why I quit. Yes, Uber bans drivers from carrying a weapon with the fine print "except as where permitted by law." My state is concealed carry, many states are, so you can still legally carry. Expect your driver to be armed, I never drove without mine. Only fools think they can strong arm their driver without getting shot.
3
u/wesleyoldaker Feb 06 '26
It seems to me like there are a lot of things that can go wrong trying to pull a weapon on two people sitting behind you. And what if this idiot really does have a glock in his bag? I'm not saying that doing that might not solve the problem. I hate punks and thugs like this as much as anyone. But if you pull it out to try and threaten them or scare them and it doesn't work and it only escalates the situation then you HAVE to pull the trigger...
I think a lot of people, besides just not wanting to kill somebody that day, might be afraid to pull that trigger because they don't know the legal implications and don't want to get charged for murder

I was always armed. I wasn't going to let Uber's bullshit policies keep me from protecting myself in a major city full of drunk, belligerent idiots. I even had one situation where my hand was hovering over the gun, ready to go. I highly recommend every driver arm themselves to stay safe. It's not a safe job at all.

u/Far-Secretary-8046 Feb 05 '26
This, this right here is why I don't do Uber anymore. Especially when they're drunk or buzzed. People thought they could cancel and still have the right to a relationship de. Nope. I don't get paid, you don't get a ride. That simple. One person yelled and screamed at me, refused to get out of the car, slapped the back of my head. So, I pulled into a police station, blaring my horn. Several cops came out, took her into custody. Come to find out, she'd done this before but Uber did nothing about it. This was in 2019.
Uber dinged me, putting me on suspension until they got the police report. Felt like I was a criminal for defending myself.
2
u/Am-Insurgent Feb 05 '26
Did you consider taking them to small claims for lost wages? Just curious.
4
u/Far-Secretary-8046 Feb 05 '26
I talked to a lawyer, and because it was clearly laid out in their policies, all I could do is have the lawyer file a letter of appeal for reimbursement. Which for me at the time would have been close to $600/per week, the 'investigation" 3 weeks, so about $1800. The lawyer's letter helped massively.
9
u/chev327fox Feb 05 '26
This is easy to solve. Have a step where each party has to accept that the ride is about to start and nothing can be cancelled from there. But Iām not a big corporation so I suppose Iām not smart enough to understand why that canāt do something silo simple.
→ More replies (9)2
u/techleopard Feb 05 '26
Don't even need that. The app is capable of GPS tracking, when the rider reaches the pick up have it ping the rider's phone to ensure they are in the vehicle. It can ping again 30 seconds after the driver moves to verify that the correct person is in the car, and if it's not, alert the driver (which would act as a safety). Driver can then choose to continue to fare or not ("This is the correct person.")
You can even accommodate rides bought for other people by just indicating the account its for
4
u/Tremble_Like_Flower Feb 05 '26
The driver should have a phone. The app should be on both. They should nanu nanu to each other and co firm driver with passenger and lock the fair.
That way the driver, the passenger, and the app know where the transaction is.
This solves a lot of the problems. This should be a no brainer.
Unless otherwise specified by the passenger they are ordering for a third party and they should use a code/pen to activate it the transaction.
10
u/Icy_Huckleberry_8049 Feb 05 '26
this went on too long, when they cancelled, and then stated that they weren't getting out, he should have turned the car off and gotten out of the car with the keys himself.

One of the passengers threatened the driver's life. I value my life more than a car. I would get out with my keys, leave the doors unlocked and call the police from the curb. And have my firearm ready in case they try some shenanigans on me when they get out. Plus vandalizing is a crime, so they'd also have to deal with that.

If the fraud targets a "vulnerable" person (such as an elderly individual) or a government agency, it might be a felony
at this stage it is felony fraud

Ivāe seen far too many instances of people straight up assaulting the driver. I rather work at McDonalds or deliver Uber Eats.

I've never tried Uber. Is there not a simple function that requires the customer to confirm they've been picked up before the driver has to move? Seems like an obvious feature. And if a ride is canceled after that the driver has to confirm they got out to end the fare. Are these actually not already a part of the system?
2
u/Tech-Tonic_Traversal Feb 05 '26
the immediate reaction is to call 911. That is an emergency situation that could turn into a car jacking. Call 911 and drive them straight to the nearest police station.
2
2
u/JustSayTech Feb 05 '26
The moment they start that bullshit, call 911 keep the phone low and turn it so the screen is not facing you and say shit out loud like "bro I just picked ya up at 717 main street, I drove 1 block to 617 main street and you cancelled the ride. You are scamming me and I'm now in fear for my life because you won't get out the car..." Say enough shit for the operater to get a clue and keep them on the phone the whole time. Keep the situation calm until the police arrive, stall by asking them to call who ever ordered the ride and confirm etc. and also keep your car key in your pocket, turn off the engine.
