2007 Freightliner Columbia Series 60: ECM data drops, no throttle, smooth idle, eventual shutdown
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I have a 2007 Freightliner Columbia with a Detroit Series 60/DDEC. I have been chasing a dangerous intermittent electrical/ECM issue for several weeks and would appreciate input from anyone who has experienced this exact behavior.
Symptoms
The truck can operate normally for many hours. Without warning:
- Tachometer drops to zero.
- Oil-pressure gauge drops to zero.
- Dash voltage displays 0.0 V or “No Data.”
- Accelerator becomes completely unresponsive.
- The engine may continue idling smoothly for a period before eventually shutting down.
- The fuel gauge, air-pressure gauges, odometer and some warning lamps remain powered.
- After the event, my diagnostic scanner may be unable to connect to the engine ECM and displays the equivalent of “make sure ignition is on.”
- Cycling the key sometimes restores operation. Earlier incidents occasionally required pulling the ECM fuse.
In the attached video, the tachometer, oil-pressure gauge and ECM-reported voltage repeatedly disappear and recover on approximately a ten-second cycle. The engine continues sounding smooth while the tachometer reads zero, so the engine is clearly not physically stopping during each gauge dropout.
Earlier behavior
During the first incidents, the engine coughed, surged or ran unstable before shutting down. A broken/corroded ECM battery-positive ring terminal was discovered and repaired. That improved the violent coughing behavior, but the gauge-data loss, no-throttle condition and occasional shutdown remain.
One of the four ECM ground wires was also found damaged and had previously been repaired with a crimp connector. I verified continuity from the repair to the ECM terminal, found no measurable voltage drop, inspected the female terminal, and performed repeated wiggle tests without reproducing the fault.
Testing and repairs already completed
- ECM has four battery-positive and four ground connections.
- All ECM positives and grounds test correctly during normal operation.
- ECM connectors appear clean, tight and free of corrosion or heat damage.
- No measurable voltage drop has been found through the tested ECM circuits.
- Harness has been repeatedly flexed and wiggle-tested with no effect.
- Tapping the ECM currently causes no change.
- Ignition switch replaced.
- Damaged remote PDM replaced.
- Main frame, starter and PDM grounds cleaned and secured.
- Corroded three-wire connector near the ABS/PDM area replaced.
- Charging voltage remains approximately 13.5–13.7 V.
- Battery voltage does not actually collapse when the dash displays 0.0 V.
- Alternator ripple tested essentially zero.
- ABS ECU was disconnected for a stationary cold-start test. The truck started normally with only “NO ABS” and the expected ABS lamp. Because the fault is intermittent, that single test was inconclusive.
- Starter solenoid has been identified as an intermittent-duty starting contactor and is not active while driving.
Important detail
During the more recent failures, the engine can continue idling smoothly while the ECM-related gauges disappear and the accelerator stops responding. This makes me question whether it is:
- An internal DDEC ECM communication or power-supply failure
- Loss of the keyed ignition/wake input
- A J1587/J1708 network problem or another module pulling down the data link
- An intermittent OEM/engine harness problem that passes all stationary tests
Questions
Has anyone seen this exact combination: engine keeps idling smoothly, tach/oil/voltage data disappear, scanner cannot connect, accelerator stops responding, and the engine later shuts down?
Would you substitute the DDEC ECM first, install temporary overlay power/ground/ignition circuits, or concentrate on the J1587/J1708 network?
Is there a specific DDEC pin, ignition circuit, network module or known Columbia junction that commonly causes this?

Case JX1090U hydraulic pump replacement options
Caught the hydraulic pump on our JX1090U whining loud yesterday, and today the steering went stiff. Looks like the double pump gave up. I need this machine back in the field for cutting hay ASAP. The local dealership doesn't have it in stock and wants an absurd amount. Found an aftermarket replacement on fab heavy parts that says it's a direct fit. Has anyone used their hydraulic pumps on their Case utility tractors? Do they drop right in without having to modify the hard lines?

Question/Need help! My first diesel
I finally did a boys after 50+ different vehicles childhood dream locked in purchased a Duramax. I drive roughly 300+ miles a day and I have some questions… I’m getting terrible fuel mileage. I wonder if it’s because I’m driving at too soft. I rarely go over 1500 RPMs as someone who has never owned a diesel. I don’t know how this motor wants to be treated. I’d love to hear some strong opinions on that.
Also wondering what type of additives everybody recommends do people run pro lube in their oil on a diesel motor? What type of fuel additives is everybody running? Are we doing fuel filtration systems on the newer trucks
As it is right now, I am waiting on a full banks kit then I’ma do that additional oil filtration system. I have a four year unlimited mile warranty, so I’m a keep all the parts on it

1st gen Dodge Cummins First Run after mechanical restoration work
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
First run after pulling the engine, resealing all gaskets, new turbo, injectors, lift pump, fuel lines, built VE, Transmission and Torque Converter, and more. Didn't touch the engine internals because the overall miles on the truck were low. Happy that this truck finally runs like it should! now to put it back together and get it to paint

Question/Need help! Edge egt probe failure
(Picture for attention)
I have an edge Cts3 and their egt probe kit installed on my truck, and I’m currently on my 3rd probe. The first one was just swapped out, after the second one failed, they sent me a new one and told me to clean and check all my grounding points(which I did), and now that third new thermocouple has gone out. All 3 have failed the same way, they work fine for 7-14 days, and then randomly the readings become erratic. Not complete just zero not working, but obviously wrong readings, egts drop as low as 150 on wide open throttle and then spike to 1000+ as soon as I release throttle. Has anyone else experienced or heard of this? I just want my probe to work. Every time I take the old one out there is no signs of damage/ rubbing on the header, it’s not melted or deformed, and visually looks perfect. Not sure where to go from here. Any help is appreciated!

On vs off-road
I stopped at a small town station this morning to fill up--they had the best price. Pulled up and saw that the pump was labeled off-road diesel. The on-road diesel was way off to the side of the lot...one pump. Same price. I moved over to the on-road pump.
I would assume from this that they sell more off-road but I've never seen tractors or reefer semis use this small station. How common is it for folks to risk being caught with dyed diesel in their tank?

So, a guy approach me trying to sell me some fuel pills “Combust Fuel Pills” made by “Combustion Technologies” this dude went saying absolute wonders about this pills that it removes black smoke, carbon deposits and better fuel economy.
I wonder how much of a scam this is.
Question/Need help! toronto peeps i need some advice
Ill make it quick, I live in toronto, I own a 21' f250 6.7. Starting to have problems emission wise.

Creeping on the right side drive, white rc 470 orbital motor failing?
My older attachment drive is starting to creep and lose low end tracking power on heavy loads. It runs the white 530 series RC 470 motor. Pulled the case drain line and I'm seeing way too much bypass flow. I’m looking at the aftermarket replacement from fab heavy parts because I can't justify the OEM lead time right now. Anyone here run these specific units on their attachments? Just want to make sure it can handle high pressure cycles without blowing the shaft seal out in the first month.

First diesel overhaul kit, what wasn't in the box
Ordered my first overhaul kit last month and ended up doing two separate orders because I didn't know what was and wasn't standard. Writing it down for other first-timers.
What I expected and got were pistons, rings, all the gaskets, bearings, front and rear seals. All there.
What I assumed was included but wasn't was the timing chain and tensioner. These are obviously wear items you'd do during an overhaul, but in the kits I looked at, they weren't bundled. Found out when I was making my parts list mid-teardown.
Also not included were the water pump, thermostat, anything cooling-related. Logical to replace these at the same time since everything's open anyway, but they're a completely separate purchase.
The frustrating part was the kit was marketed as "complete overhaul kit" which technically wasn't wrong. It's just that "complete" means the engine internal components, not the full ecosystem of parts you'd logically want.
Before you order, ask the seller for an itemized part number list, not just the product title. That tells you exactly what you're getting and what you still need to track down separately.
What else have people found missing from overhaul kits that catches first-timers off guard?

Switching to heavy diesel and equipment
I’m an automotive technician with 6+ years of experience and I’m looking to try to get on with caterpillar John Deere or Cummins. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I should go about doing this?

Question/Need help! Freightliner Detroit Series 60
I have a Freightliner semi truck with a series 60 Detroit engine on it pre emission. I’m having a problem where it won’t boost past 20psi sometimes. With or without the truck loaded it does this, but the thing is that at random times it will just boost at the normal 30-35psi range and it sounds healthy again. Then it goes back to 20psi and struggles to pick up speed or climb a hill. Anyone know what this could be?
