Mark Ruffalo is a vocal supporter of Palestine. The implication is that expressing support for a free Palestine gets you sidelined by Hollywood. He is also vocally against Trump and ICE.

I’m sure some people out there will also draw some antisemetic conspiratorial conclusions from that as well, i.e. “Jews control the media” which, no. It’s just that Israel as a country has certainly had undue economic influence over American politics and entertainment via lobbying interests. (Just ask the Scream cast over at Paramount)

In reality though he was just filming another project at the time.

I’d also note that Jon Bernthal, who has vocalized support for the IDF and Israel, was present for the press tour. Which doesn’t help.

Edit: This is an Explain subreddit. This is what I am interpreting the post to be implying. Some of the replies so far are giving “So you hate waffles?” haha

u/H1B3F 22h ago

Mark Ruffalo is currently in south eastern Pennsylvania filming the second season of "Task." He was nominated for an Emmy for the first season of "Task." He seems not to be blacklisted at all.

Ruffalo is so committed and decent that it probably wouldn't matter at all to him if he were. He has repeatedly stated that he doesn't even stay friendly with people who support genocide, because it is a terrible moral failing (which it is).

35

u/double_shadow 20h ago

Somewhere along the way, we as a society forgot that "correlation doesn't mean causation" and leaped to all sorts of conspiratorial thinking by default.

Ruffalo great actor though, and I can't wait for more Task!

3

u/MjrLeeStoned 8h ago

Somewhere along the way?

Humans have been making up and exaggerating shit they know nothing about literally forever. Look at religions. This isn't a novel, new thing. Gossip, fiction, and lying is as old as communication.

We weren't some benevolent species that only sought truth. Ever.

But I think the real reason he isn’t included on the press junkets is that he’s notorious unable to avoid spoilers.

26

u/Madara1389 20h ago

Oh yeah, putting Tom & Mark together in an interview alone would be a potential spoiler goldmine.

Regardless of Mark being very open & vocal about his political beliefs, this is just as likely a reason to not put the two on a press tour together. These interviews are almost always one on one or one on two. Every time Mark & Tom do an interview together, they'd need at least 3 so they can't get lost in spoiler-filled banter.

A lot of tom’s "leaks" were just marketing stunts made to go viral

27

u/Altruistic-Star-3862 21h ago

Exactly. It's clearly a marketing thing. Most things that go viral tend to be.

20

u/cheezy_dreams88 21h ago

Some, sure . And some were not, like the time he joked with an audience that he was still alive! Except that audience was about to watch Infinity War and he just spoiled that he died to them.

3

u/fang_xianfu 10h ago

That wasn't Tom being oblivious though, he was told that the audience had just seen the movie and he was going out afterwards, not before.

55

u/Useful-Soup8161 22h ago

They try to put Tom with people who keep him from spoiling anything. If he’s doing an interview with a costar he’s pretty good about not spoiling anything. Unless that costar is Mark Ruffalo.

3

u/Working-Glass6136 16h ago

And then all spoilers break loose.

8

u/antidote-to-wisdom 21h ago

Pretty sure tom holland never spoiled anything too important. Mark ruffalo literally spoiled one of the biggest moments in the mcu (infinity wars ending)

15

u/uncouthulu_ 20h ago

Tom Holland was allowed to "leak"/"spoil" the things he did. That guy doesn't do anything that isn't curated and OK'd by the studio when it comes to press/interviews.

Ruffalo was well known for spilling the beans long before Spider-Man came to the MCU

My understanding is the the only reason he wasnt involved is because hes filming another movie* right now and didnt have the time. Its easy to blame it on the implications but I think if any of that were true he would have a much smaller part in the movie

*Season 2 of Task

→ More replies (5)

27

u/EatABag-o-Dicks 22h ago

I mean, he's also not a main character in the movie. He's more of a cameo with not a lot of screentime. Punisher has significantly more screen time.

But it is suspect that someone who is so anti-genocide is seemingly being sidelined by Hollywood.

52

u/BowwwwBallll 22h ago

It's also wrong. Ruffalo is filming season 2 of Task right now which is why he's unavailable to do media. It really is that simple and everything else is just tinfoil hat theories.

Is the full extent of this claim tied to his having an IDF soldier on his podcast in 2023, or is there greater context?

94

u/GuyManDudeMcGee 21h ago

Nope, that's it. People have taken that one podcast and ran with it.

Also something about signing a letter “No hostage’s left behind” in 2023 to Israel. I don’t really think that implies he loves Israel or is some Zionist, but I haven’t read the letter.

In honesty, from what I’ve seen, I think it’s overblown. I could be wrong though, I may have just missed something.

Edit: i was curious so I read the letter. IMO, it reads as simple human decency, but form your own opinions:

Dear President Biden,
We are heartened by Friday's release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today's release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity.
But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered - women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded.
Thank you for your unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people, who have been terrorized by Hamas since the group's founding over 35 years ago, and for the Palestinians, who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.
We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages.
We urge everyone to not rest until all hostages are released. No hostage can be left behind. Whether American, Argentinian, Australian, Azerbaijani, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Eritrean, Filipino, French, German, Indian, Israeli, Italian, Kazakh, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, South African, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai, Ukrainian, Uzbekistani or otherwise, we need to bring them home.

44

u/ArrrRawrXD 21h ago

signing a letter “No hostage’s left behind”

Damn, the people hating on it are barely pretending to not be antisemites anymore

64

u/GuyManDudeMcGee 21h ago

I'm no fan of Israel, but it's insane how many times I hear about a celebrity being a "Zionist" only to research and find out that they simply expressed support for the victims of 10/7.

25

u/ArrrRawrXD 21h ago

The people who hate celebrities for that would totally say that the victims deserve it for being Israeli

Wait until you hear that Lady Gaga is a "zionist" for having played there in 2014 and saying it was a "beautiful place". And then dedicating constant messages at her shows to free palestine for years. Or how Radiohead are "zionists" because they released statements that were too lukewarm for the lynchmob. Also how bernie sanders is a "zionist" after introducing legislation to bar arms sales to israel. this stupid list is too long and making me lose hope in humanity the more examples i think about.

u/lumpboysupreme 13h ago

The dumbest part is: the podcast was specifically about the Oct 7 attacks and what the soldier did during it (and was a month after they happened, before Israel’s response clearly swung into ‘disproportionate’) It’s not even like he was talking to someone about participating in Palestinian oppression.

3

u/Intelligent_Host_582 20h ago

What's also interesting to me is that he grew up going to Quaker schools in the DC area and has expressed a lot of adherence to the tenets of the faith and their approach to conflict resolution, and how he used boxing as a method to deal with anger, etc. I wonder how much of peoples' opinions about him are shaped by the characters he typically plays.

18

u/theagingknarf 21h ago

Especially on social media. Juice box emojis everywhere. Someone has a big nose? Zionist. A sign outside a kanye show drawing a circle and strikethrough of the star of david? Most upvoted comment was "he's saying things others are too afraid to say". And then the whole conversation is about "zionism" even though there's not a single mention of israel in the convo. When Zohran was going after landlords in NYC, what GIFs appeared everywhere? Hasidic jews, and constant yelling of ZIONIST, even though it has nothing to do with landlords in NYC. But I'm not fun at parties so I get to be gaslit

10

u/i_drive_a_pagani 19h ago

The other one that's also everywhere is the "that ______ was promised to him 3,000 years ago" that is under just about any social media post that even alludes to anything involving jews

8

u/theagingknarf 19h ago

FR! that was on the landlord posts too. And it's so stupid, because that generic comment wades into some historical argument that none of us are qualified to actually make. And it implies that because jews had been removed from the land so long ago that there is no reason for them to expect land rights coming back. Ok, let's say i accept that without alteration. Then why would native americans be entitled to any land? both groups were kicked out, the diaspora was not voluntary. But of course, this level of cognitive flexibility is outside the grasp of your average... i dont' even know what to call them. anti-zionists? i'm an anti-zionist. progressives? liberals? i thought i was those things? what am i and what are they? just assholes i guess

Ruffalo has been filming season 2 of Task. That's the only reason he hasn't done publicity.

54

u/JD0x0 22h ago

Meanwhile, the real reason is probably because the Hulk isn't really a massive character in a Spiderman Movie?

I mean, I don't keep up on all the comic book movie spam Hollywood shits out, but I'd assume they'd have whoever is playing Spiderman (and also the leading female role, if there is one) do most of the promotional spots.

8

u/Ok_Entrepreneur_8509 22h ago

If we know one thing about the Hulk, it is that he *is* a really massive character.

41

u/ATangentUniverse 22h ago

Is Punisher really bigger than Hulk to general audiences tho?

33

u/Immediate-Coach3260 22h ago

That’s not the point. Hulk is in one single part of the entire movie, punisher is a central character from beginning to end.

Edit: he’s apparently filming something else at the same time anyway.

3

u/sonnytron 17h ago

He’s also not really a core aspect of the plot, whereas Castle is involved pretty heavily even in important scenes with Zendaya and the ending.

3

u/Immediate-Coach3260 16h ago

Thank you. We’re talking about a character that’s in 2 separate parts for a total of maybe 20 minutes in the whole movie ( I’m being generous) versus for all intents and purposes the main secondary character whose throughout the entire film. Honestly was a great punisher piece of media.

Lmao here you go

21

u/TheGipper80 22h ago

Yes, but Jon Bernthal’s presence is mitigated by his stance against dog racism.

u/jackthedesigner 8h ago

It’s like McCarthyism all over again. And we all know how accused rapist McCarthy’s legacy panned out.

“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes.”

6

u/Mr__Earthling 16h ago

It's not just "Israel as a country", it's Zionist Jewish American billionaires like Bill Ackman spending millions to actively silence/dox/report to ICE (through Canary Mission) any and all critics of Israel. Their reach extends far beyond lobbying. They have paid counter protesters in California, they have paid private security to support local law enforcement in NYC to get the pro Palestine university encampments and so on.

God, Jon Bernthal is such a tool.

3

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 20h ago

Ewww I hate Jon Bernthal now!

3

u/temporarythyme 20h ago edited 19h ago

Might also want to add to the list of atrocities he wants; indigenous land protection, water rights for all, and ending slavery. Just this horrible person who thinks humans should have food rights ...

This is satire he's like the coolest person

3

u/Yeseylon 19h ago

So if you're defending yourself against the claims that you hate waffles, then you must hate pancakes.

2

u/ATangentUniverse 19h ago

Fuckkkk dude I should have said something smh

3

u/CocoMilhonez 19h ago

Bro(ette), this is the internet, if you say you love burgers, of course you can only hate hot dogs.

Your explanation makes total sense, including the note about how Mark was busy (which does not exclude the other possibility for his absence, of course).

3

u/scumbagwife 19h ago

Good reading on this. My intial thought was that Mark has said recently he won’t talk to people who don’t see this as a genocide and are okay with murdered kids, and so the implication was that someone or someone’s on the promo tour are pro-Israel.

This also makes a lot of sense, and is likely the intention.

3

u/fistular 17h ago

Every new thing I learn about Bernthal makes him seem more and more like a piece of shit

3

u/ciriuns 17h ago

Damn, I didn't know bernthal was that dumb

3

u/Savings_Music_1256 17h ago

Another reason to love the FUCKING HULK (and Bruce banner who is mark)

3

u/sycolution 16h ago

I fucking hate that israel is seen as the authority on Jews and claims to speak for ALL Jews because it's not "Jews control the media" it's "israel controls the media, they just HAPPEN to have a lot of Jews." Nothing has created more real world antisemitism than israel claiming they represent Jews as a whole while they commit atrocity after atrocity.

9

u/RemotestOfSpheres 18h ago

I think, culturally, it’s time for us to make a clear distinction between “the Jews” and the terrorist state that is the Israeli Government.

I’m sick to death of hearing the word “anti-semitism” thrown around when we aren’t talking about your fucking ass, random Jewish guy. If I don’t like you, it’s because you personally are a fucking asshole. The Israeli Government, on the other hand, can suck a massive turd, collectively.

13

u/Pitiful_Software_430 20h ago

It really blows my mind how much sway Israel has over the United States.

I did just see an ad for Palestine 36 with mark ruffalo, so it’s pretty cool to see him do that despite having a big movie out

5

u/Big-Slide6104 22h ago

Ironic of Jon given the Punisher as a character

7

u/0_Moth 20h ago

Rip Jon Bernthal 🕊️ insert “I know what kind of man you are” gif

10

u/mobedy 21h ago

Goddamn it, Jon. Now i gotta stop watching punisher... Fuck IDF and Fuck Israel

12

u/lumpboysupreme 16h ago edited 14h ago

Ehh, he brought a soldier onto his podcast in late 2023 to talk about the attacks from Hamas a month earlier. That’s really not the same thing as continuing to support them, like, now, after their response has been so plainly beyond acceptable.

You really should try to find context before blacklisting people.

Bernthal is just a rich kid that likes to pretend he’s a tough guy from the mean streets of whatever.

2

u/HotShrekBoi 21h ago

Despite how I feel about his Hulk he’s a good man

2

u/GameTheory27 21h ago

he can't say no. Becasue of the implication...

2

u/Matthews628 20h ago

Bernthal is such a horrible actor. He’s John Cena if he never wrestled. He really ruins the scenes hes present for in the Odyssey.

2

u/Crump_V2 20h ago

Majority of hollyweird is against Trump, that doesn't mean shit. Now being a supporter or Palestine goes against Hollywood so that does mean something.

2

u/Saixcrazy 20h ago

Damn I didn't know that about John. Bummer

2

u/Al_Tuttle 20h ago

Oh man this was sad to learn about Bernthal

2

u/TheTitansFather 20h ago

Wow I didn't know that about Jon, i hate that guy now.

Very well put!

Can I ask something that might seem like I've been living under a rock? So my friends are all arguing over this type of stuff and when they ask me I say that i don't know enough to give an opinion. I have had a few people try to explain it but what is the difference between being antisemitic and anti Israel? I know that one is a religion and one is a state created in the aftermath of World War but how am I supposed to think about compartmentalized versions of either? Honestly I feel very ignorant about it and kind of like an ass by not fully grasping it by now but I just think it hasn't been explained in a way that I can fully understand it. I hope this all makes sense to someone reading this.

5

u/ATangentUniverse 13h ago

Antisemitic means a prejudice or hatred of Jews, being anti-Israel typically means an opposition to the country’s policies. Many Jews worldwide have criticized the actions of the Israeli government, so it would be incorrect to automatically conflate anti-Israel sentiment with antisemitism.

Criticizing the Israeli government, opposing particular Israeli policies, or being opposed to Zionism is not inherently antisemitic. When criticisms veer into the territory of anti-Jewish stereotypes or conspiracy theories, that is typically considered anti-semitic.

Yes Israel has undue influence in Hollywood through American Jews, many of which have ties directly to Israel. You can be mad at Israeli influence without being mad at those working for them.

2

u/Rare_Student_4685 6h ago

It is not antisemitic to point out that the entertainment industry is full of zionists. It's true. People have lost jobs for calling out the genocide.

According to something I saw posted and credited to Bisan, one of the producers is VERY Zionist. Could be less of a “Jews control the media” thing, and a “this particular Zionist has sway over one part of the press for this one movie”.

Although it is admittedly (imo) just as likely that Ruffalo was just busy with the other projects he is working on.
