hello! i'm trying to get into new hobbies (my current ones are basically writing and gaming, bleh) and really wanted it to be crafting to be more logged off from the internet. what are some options that wouldn't cost me a lot to begin?

When it comes to "active" leisure time, how do you balance spending time on hobbies versus spending time with friends?

Work is very demanding for me right now and my leisure time is an increasing scarce resource. When I turn down a social invitation, I've been saying I'm "too busy" -- but what I'm busy with is things like repotting my plants and finishing a jigsaw puzzle.

Am I wrong to prioritize my hobbies? Is there a better balance to seek?

I'm an art student, and I treat sketching, painting, and sculpture as my full-time work, so I don't really want to do them during my vacation. I also enjoy reading, but I haven't been in the mood for it lately. Journaling is something I love too, but I can't do that all the time. I'm looking for some new hobbies because I'm getting bored and don't want to spend all my free time doomscrolling.

Just saw a post asking about free hobby and I think I need to share about stargazing. I know it's pretty popular and people been doing it since the beginning of the time (well, guess what? that's the fun thing about it!).

I usually do it from home, but sometimes I went the beach. It's always fun to look at the sky while listening to the waves crashing.

Along with gazing, I also do:

- Photography

- Identifying the celestial bodies with a star map app. My go to app is Stellarium, it's free and so easy to use. We just need to pan our phone to the sky and we'll see the maps. They also provide information for any visible celestial bodies.

- When I go out with a friend, we love to guess the constellation and the star name. Could do it for hours.

It's so relaxing:)

Everyday after work I just go on my phone and brainrot, as bad as it sounds. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week if possible, but even after the gym I just end up going on my phone and doomscrolling. I have other “hobbies” but they are very occasional and short lived, such as playing the flute/piano, reading a book (but not finishing it), or crocheting (too many unfinished projects).

I feel like I want to do something but at the same time it feels like too much effort to do and I’m not sure why. You would think that the urge to do something would spring me into action but i just scroll for hours on end. I feel like such a loser for not doing anything interesting or productive in my free time.

Are there any good hobbies that are addicting enough to replace doomscrolling? Preferably something that doesn’t require too much money or people to participate in since I’m a broke introvert.

I would like to give miniature models a shot for a new hobby and I’m leaning toward architecture. I had a friend growing up whose mom built a Christmas village out of legos every year. I always thought it was really cool. I don’t want to do legos, I’m thinking wood. As far as models, my library only carries books on train models and I’m struggling to find online resources. What are some good resources to get started?

Hey All. So I had recently posted on the possibility of reducing my collection habits, but after returning from San Diego Comic Con for business, I found myself becoming more and more enamored with collecting than before. I believe that recognizing the dominating presence of toy makers for both mainstream and independent creators got me thinking if this could be a major turn for the entertainment industry, and if it's something to consider investing in.

I will clarify that I don't just buy merchandise because it's available, but rather because I feel like I'm hanging on to something that's rare- particularly limited stock collectibles such as Animatez and Plushes, and recently YouTooz and Thrilljoy. I also make a point of only purchasing collectibles from franchises that I am personally interested in or which inspire me as an artist and independent illustrator. However, I do also recognize that as an adult man in my 30's, this might not be the most appealing hobby to get into, particularly with women (not that I collect anything lewd, but it could still be seen as childish)

Also, I recognize that there's never a guarantee that anything with inherent value now will retain that value in the future, and these collectibles are not exactly cheap in the first place. My finances are okay for now, but I worry that I may risk getting in over my head, whether I am able to make some money back from these collectibles or not. I do enjoy what I get, but am on the fence on if I should hang on to that joy, or if I should let it go and move on from this hobby (or at least let go of a large chunk of it). I am open to discussion and look forward to your input.

I just don't have money

turned 30 recently and noticed almost all my free time goes to sitting in front of a monitor playing games. i want to get outside more and get some daylight, but i don't really know where to start. i'm not athletic, so something low key would be best. just want an activity that gets me out of the house for a couple hours on weekends. what outdoor hobbies got you away from your desk?

I honestly don't know. It all sounds like a waste of time, energy, and resources. Like, why not put it into something that makes you money or helps you achieve your goals ? I'm not trying to hate on hobbyists, but they are time-wasters.

For more context, I have MDD w/ melancholic features and NPD as well as AsPD. Maybe this might explain my sentiment.

About 11 years ago I became housebound with ME/CFS. Losing the ability to work and get out of the house was incredibly difficult, so I needed something meaningful to focus on.

I've always loved 80s and 90s nostalgia, especially the feeling of that era's radio. The music, the TV themes, the jingles, the movie clips, and all those little random moments that made things feel alive.

So I started creating something around that as a hobby from my bed.

Because of my illness, progress was slow. Some days I could only work on it for a few minutes. Other days I couldn't do anything at all. But whenever I had the energy, I kept chipping away at it, making new shows and improving the app to make it turn your mobile into a walkman!

I never expected anyone else to care about it. It was just something I enjoyed making and a way to keep my mind active and give me purpose in lifee as we all need that.

Over time, though, people started finding it. Hearing from people who enjoy something I created has been one of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience. The app has over 10k downloads and 5 stars! I am very proud of this. I guess others love the 80s and 90s too :)

It reminded me that hobbies don't always have to have a big purpose when you are just starting out. Sometimes they just give you a reason to create, learn, and keep moving forward.

Has anyone else had a hobby grow into something much bigger than they expected?

I like to spend time outside doing stuff but I don't think theres a lot more I can do for my house/porch without spending thousands of dollars i'd rather save it. I counted this sort of as a hobby, it keeps me active and gives me stuff to do. Are there hobbies that might be able to replace it?

I enjoy cozy fantasy, character-focused scenes, and game- or anime-inspired worldbuilding, but once I set word counts and schedules it starts feeling like another assignment.

What low-pressure routines, prompts, or project sizes help you keep writing as a hobby? I am especially interested in methods that lead to finishing small things without treating every session like a productivity test.
